IMHO Tippo's Tiger is among your very best work integrating your elegant
lines with image and color (and printing). Humorous, too? I didn't think of

Hi Folks.  I just rejoined Baren after so many
years.  I have not been totally out of
touch having visited Baren often to see what was going on.  I am still a terrible woodblock artist but I
keep trying.  I
have produced just one simple print I am happy with.  If I can figure how to upload it I will do
so.  
 
For those who know me I am
excited about reigniting our friendships.  For those who do not know me, the others will warn you soon enough.  This first post is short with just one
question.
I have done a number of drypoint’s
and like doing them in B&W.  I am
working on a large plate “Christ Before Pontius Pilate”.  My question is simple: when does a hand
carved block not be a hand carved block?  As I get older (71 going on 50 although friends say I am going on 14)
the arthritis in my fingers gets worse.  I can only work 15 minutes and have to quit.  I know some artists use a Dremel Tool but
there are a number of woodwork aids that can be used.  (Jim Mundie may be the person to answer
this.)  Does the artist have the right to
say he/she is a woodblock artist if such mechanical assistance is available?  Finally, I am moving to Omaha to open my last
printshop and gallery, woodblock to be included.  More later!  Did I say short???

Holly molly..... Ray is Back.
Nice to hear from you old friend.
There is no limitation as to the tools one uses to create a wooden plate.
If you want to use an Az or an Axe so be it. I know of someone who uses a router to get rid of the large area rather than whack away with a chisel. It is the end result that matter and if this is achieved in the conventional printing method .... be it a baren or a etching press.... is the important issue. Inkjet printing could count... but then I am damned if I know how to get a wooden plate to run through my printer.

I remember the fun stuff that went on, when you were last one.... that must have been 20 years ago.... Marnie and I are knocking on the damn 80 door.... and our health and condition is fantastic, bordering on obscene.... Painted our house a few weeks ago.... oh my aching body. This spring I knocked down a few trees and cut and split it getting 2 (bush) cords of fir. I have become a serious fisher chasing Rainbow, Salmon and Steelhead using a fly rod.... great fun.
