Subject: Excellent Amateur Woodblock Printing and Calligraphy from all over Japan
I happened to stumble onto two simultaneous nationwide exhibitions of competitive amateur calligraphy and woodblock prints when I was in Tokyo to meet with the other participants in the printing course. The attached photos are from these shows which were held in the ‘citizen’s galleries’ of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The semicircular calligraph is an ancient one for the rainbow (nishi in Japanese) and the others were ancient, simple ones that have modern equivalents. A Chinese friend could read them sort of and get the jist of what was written. The woodblock print of the woman spinning wool was just one of many excellent ones, 18 rooms full of them. Most remarkable. |
