Itty bitty prints is exactly right. Come on guys join in. Baren
started with just a few and in the early years we always had to fight
to get into an exchange. Now we have grown and grown and it seems
fewer and fewer want to take part. I realize I only do about one
exchange a year. I have a good reason, it is more difficult when you
spend half the year in Mexico and at least 5 weeks on the road. These
exchanges are fabulous, give you good insight and teach as well as
please. The lack of participation surely can't be the economy and the
expense, the size is tiny.

We had a summit canceled due to lack of interest, now our exchanges
are dwindling due to lack of interest. Is Baren now just a big long
list of folks who just don't want to participate? Because, there are a
lot of you.

Maria, sure had a grand project. And she had help. Where are the rest
of you guys? I realize all of us can't participate all the time but
with the number of members we have our exchanges should be FULL.

And, wouldn't you like to meet the people you exchange art work with?
They are amazing, I assure you.

My name is Jeff Simpson, a printmaker in New Mexico. How can I get involved
in these print exchanges?

Graham beat me to it with the link, Jeff. The only requirement is that it be a you honor the paper size and theme (if there is one) and that you get the edition in on time. And the coordinators are very easy to work with if you have any questions as you go. Welcome aboard.

I noticed you are associated with New Grounds. I had a wonderful one-on-one some while back with Regina, learning the vagaries of solarplate, lots of fun. I'll have to stop by the next time in ABQ.

Sharen,

Very tempting!! My question is: does one need a press to print from an
engraving or can it be done with a baren?

Namaste,

Hello, Eileen,

People do use the back of a spoon to print wood engravings. I
think it would help to have a block-high framework in which to
put the corner of your block and paper to protect the paper
corners from being bent and deformed as you impress the paper
with your spoon onto the block. (That happens so easily!) I
haven't used a baren for wood engraving, so I don't know.

I usually use a pull-across proofing press like the one on the
blue table in the foreground of this photo,
http://www.alembicpress.co.uk/Alempages/Printshop.htm (This is
not my printshop! ;-) ) or a Vandercook Proof Press. It's just
easier to get uniform prints.

You can find more about wood engraving on Andy English's site:
http://www.andyenglish.com/page/1crrc/Wood_Engraving/What_Is_Wood_Engraving.html

http://www.andyenglish.com/page/1qxpx/Wood_Engraving/A_Brief_History_of_Wood_Engraving.html

Simon Brett has great books on wood engraving, and you may enjoy
the beautiful work of the Society of Wood Engravers here:
http://www.woodengravers.co.uk/gallery.html

McClaine's in Portland and Graphic have tools and some blocks.

It's such a different kind of printmaking! You might enjoy it!
I love it!

Eileen,
Because the paper is damp, I think it could be printed by hand with oil based inks or the Akua waterbased intaglio inks if you used a spoon or a home make baren, ala Maria Arango. She has some great ones on her website made from wooden door knobs and wooden buttons. It takes a big more pressure to print an engraving but a small one should be doable!
My best
Barbara

Subject: Arts of Japan series : case construction part 8
Posted by: Dave Bull

A couple of days ago, I showed a photograph of my workbench covered with case parts ... Having my table saw go out of commission put a bit of a dint in the plan for the next day, but the router table came to the rescue, and the final work on getting all the parts ready for assembly was finished late last night:

The tops are all jointed, glued up, and grooved for the stand, and the small pieces for the front of the case have been split on the bandsaw at a 5 degree angle; this will be the 'lip' of the case opening. (These parts are taped together so that the pairs won't get separated.)
