The initial question was about defining hand-pulled prints. I don't think anyone
is critiquing methods. But every artist should be aware of some of the existing
prejudices and definitions, which change with every venue it seems. I
offered some of the definitions that I recall from fine art festival applications.

There are some that don't make any distinction at all and some that define every
aspect of prints. There are some that exclude multiples altogether to avoid
the whole issue.

My advice (after having my first solo show back in August) is to just crank
out work and don't critique yourself (which I am great at!). Be responsible
for quantity, and quality will sort of sort itself out. Here in NM, work
seems to be priced by the square inch, so perhaps look at some galleries in
your area and price accordingly. My opinion is not to under price. You do
yourself and your fellows a disservice. I waited til the 11th hour to get
all my work done, and it ended up working out, but it was stressful. I wish
I had disciplined myself to work earlier than I did.

Hi Everyone!Things have been really quiet on the list lately. Just wanted to call your attention to the upcoming Exchange 53. Sign-ups will open on April 1, 2012. There is no theme for this exchange, but we do get to do a size of paper called "other." ;o) This time we will be featuring the Yatsugiri-ban size which measures 3.75 x 5 inches (9.5 x 12.7 cm), a great opportunity to use up those odd size papers left over from larger paper-size exchanges. With an open theme, the sky is the limit! This should be great fun!Keep in mind that the deadline for completed prints is on or before August 1, 2012. A small word of caution here: We all get so busy with life's activities, it would be helpful if you take a moment to look ahead on the calendar a few weeks. If it looks like your summer (northern hemisphere) is going to be packed with many other commitments, you may want to wait for the next exchange. We had several folks overextend their time commitments last summer, which in turn ended up effecting the success of the exchanges they had signed up for. All members of Baren are encouraged to get involved with the exchange program. It is an incredible way of connecting with other printmakers, building your own skills, and of course, building up your art collection with the many fantastic prints from all over the world! You are encouraged to review the rules for Baren Forum Exchanges at the following link: http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/rules.html Cutting and Printing is sunny southern Utah....spring is definitely here,Kristine P.S. We have need of a couple of motivated printmakers to jump into Exchange 52 to complete the participant group after a couple of artists had to drop out. Please contact Diane Cutter or me at coordinator52@barenforum.org .
