Thanks, everyone. I'm working on changes on the map since I had a few prints turned the wrong way, some alphabetical errors, a mispelling on a name, etc.
I'll wait a week or so until all changes are made after people report in, and send a pdf, so it won't be in separate files.

I too wish to thank Gayle for her hard work. The boxes look wonderful,
what a "gift". I enjoyed the preview of all the prints. Since, I will
have to wait until spring to really hold them and look at them it was
a special treat to see them in advance.

I am enjoying the Baja sunshine, eating great Mexican food and walking
on the beach every morning with my doggies.

Cut Print and have fun,

I got my tiny prints and they are SPECTACULAR. You all think the 'map'
is great. It is. It's a 'great' teaser! but the real thing is utterly
amazing including the beautiful little box they come in! Thank you,
Gayle. You have set the bar for exchanges.

Perfect for December and the holidays. What a gift. Think of the hours
carving, the colors being mixed, the sound of ink. OMG, what a gift.

I'm even actually sort of glad that I got four of mine back as my
friends who do ATCs (Artists Trading Cards) have been clamoring to
trade. All but one of my A/Ps are gone! It will be fun to extend the
reach of this project just one little bit further.

Thanks to all the artists as well, Your work is ... well, magnificent!

Be careful of which pigments you use with the WN medium. As far as I know, it is still slightly acidic and will eventually act against and fade acid sensitive pigments such as ultramarines.

Couple of ideas to try:
1) Use 'iro-nori' (tinted paste). Make a fairly runny paste mix, tint
it with the tone you want, and print with that. This works very well
for delicate colours.

2) Use just a tiny amount of the 'active' pigment, in a base of Winsor
& Newton Transparent Watercolour Medium. (or, alternatively, a liquid
gum arabic mix). Use this as your colour, and print normally with
(runny) paste.

My wonderful little box of prints arrived today. I am curious about
the little box.......how perfect. Did you find them somewhere or
design and make them........or have them made specially.? Thank you
for all that work..........and husband, too, I guess. ElizA

Thanks for the story Dave
Nice long one too.

It would be interesting if Bareners shared the stories of how they came to
woodblock printing.

I'm pushing the limit of this particular piece of Shina Plywood. I can carve thinner lines but the glue holding the veneer firm is not always uniform and pieces will pop off. Sometimes due to a slip of the chisel and sometimes not. (A careful look at the photos will show that I gave myself some extra space while carving--I'm a good 1-2mm away from my hanshita lines but I still had a good 8-9 slips/losses/gaps.)

It's a offshoot of Murphy's law that a small loss of line is always in a critical area and not some irrelevant spot. It's always the eye or nose or a letter etc.
In this case it is the Maple seed that will be the focus of the image.

Here are a few photos of the slips (but already with repairs in progress).

Subject: One step forward, two long delays
Posted by: Sherrie Y

It's been an interesting couple of days around here. And by interesting I mean simultaneously exciting and dreary. I finally bit the bullet and launched myself into computer upgrade purgatory... pushed the "purchase" button at Apple on Monday, and got the new machine yesterday.

An iMac is, of course, a thing of beauty, but OOPH. I've put off the upgrade for too long because of the inevitable cascade of compatibility headaches. I was three (count 'em, three) operating systems out of date... stepping up just two of them rendered a printer, a scanner, and a hugely expensive chunk of software obsolete. (sigh)

So for two days I've been doing file transfer and triage, and I'm mostly functional for now. (I've got 30 days before my big, fat chunk of trial software is gonna need a cash infusion.)

Tonight I finally felt satisfied that I could walk away from it, so dashed up to the studio to see where things stand with the two prints in progress.

My Problem Child is still a problem: the eucalyptus leaves lino is too, too wet to apply that last layer of ink, so there it sits.

The little swallow linocut is faring better, however. Wednesday, BCU (Before Computer Upgrade) I added another color layer to what you may or may not have figured out is a nest box. I did this using a mask, which I actually remembered to photograph this time.

A tracing paper mask lets me ink only the area of the nest box and not the entire block.

Nifty, eh?

Tonight I took a deep breath and started to do something with the background of this piece. I'm a little afraid that I've gone too dark here, but maybe not. I'm going to print out a couple of copies of this photo and get out the colored pencils and see if I can decide what to do next before I start hacking away at the block again.
