So much movement and energy in your prints, Olek. Great work. And the web site looks good too.

Barbara, thanks for the good news about price reductions in the Baren Mall. I can attest that those Michi knives are excellent, and I use the sosaku brushes too. Time for an order!

Happy printing to all...

Hi Carole,

In South Africa, the Centre for Japanese Studies (CJS), University of
Pretoria, sold 50 prints in Johannesburg in a month from late August to
late September. The exhibition then went to Cape Town, and 16 additional
prints were sold in late October. The show is back in Johannesburg, this
time, at Vlo Gallery from late November to mid January. In the opening
night (25 November), I gave a lecture on Japanese woodblock printmaking
to the audience from South Africa, Germany, Austria, Spain, Zimbabwe,
Uganda, etc. I will give you an update in mid-January when this show closes.

Olek,

Very powerful work. I too was amazed that you print with ashes.
Outstanding!

Hello Olek, Congratullations on your work. I liked the strong design of the woodblocks and the "Noche oscura" book.Saludos from Mxico, Guadalupe

thanx a lot man.

BTW, its very nice grey colour, and I don't have to worry about pigment. I
take it straight from the fireplace.

Subject: White Line - Carving Continues
Posted by: Ellen Shipley

Another couple hours of work this morning.  I'll get back to it this afternoon.

BTW, I'm battling my way thru my supply of baltic birch.  It's rather chippy.  I'd gotten used to shina, which I much prefer and will go back to when these blocks are used up.

Here's the block inked up and locked onto the press bed.

The first proof. I need to do a fair bit of tidying up, removing especially the spots in the sky area and tonal adjusting generally. The edges need to be more irregular so I'll fade off the squareness a bit down that left hand edge. The forgeround lady's cap needs lightening somehow. The shadow under the wave is too regular and needs adjusting.

I'll leave it for the rest of the day and think about it.

As you can see, I made good progress yesterday and just have a small area of wave to engrave, along with a cozzie and a few tweaks here and there. If I get on ok today I may be able to run off a first proof to see how the print looks.

Subject: Carving again
Posted by: Andrew Stone

Enough baking.
Time to do some more work.

I've put off any more of my road sign pieces until I can get some plain white/fine mica. I wanted a shift in color anyway.
I had planned on moving into a bigger piece for one of my sign works but a small outdoor sketch of the one Japanese Maple we have in the fields came out looking very
Secession-like and I prepped it for a small print but when I went to xerox it to make my hanshita the copier was set at 100% and it doubled the image.

Hmmm. That would be MUCH easier to carve I thought (as I was wondering if my eyes/hands/skill and cherry would tolerate the thin lines) but scaled up it would probably fit a piece of Shina plywood I've been saving.

So, work has begun.
I'm carving the keyblock for what should be a 14" x 14" print.
I'm happy to be carving again and can't wait to try printing something this size again too.
