Hello Bareners',

I am supposed to be exhibiting 4 of my color reduction woodcut prints (titled: O.A., Gen, Garlic, & B&W Garlic) at a gallery on Mission St., in downtown San Francisco. It is a pay to exhibit gallery and I have a contract for 3 months that started on Oct. 4. I just am not sure whether they have actually put my artworks up for display, they are not cooperative as far as my request to email me a photo of the works (on display), and for now I'm tired of dealing with them. If I was to find out some how that they are not honoring the agreement we have, there isn't a whole lot I could do about it anyway, it's hard for me to prove anything from here in Washington DC.

If anyone happens to live in downtown San Francisco and is in the area of this gallery, I would love to know if they are honest or not. The address is:

The Artists Alley Gallery
863 Mission Street
Across Bloomingdales Mall
Between 4th & 5th Streets
San Francisco, CA 94103

415 522 2440 / 415 259 6584

Gallery Hours:
11am To 7pm Everyday, US Pacific Time

Thanx to anyone who might help!

Michael

Elizabeth Atwood wrote "Interesting is the Paul Revere illustrations. BUT I wonder what a "woodcut in lead" means."

I wondered that too. I was thinking it might mean that the original was a woodcut but that it was later cast in lead. On the other hand, Revere was a silversmith so it's quite possible that the image was literally carved into a lead plate and then printed in relief like a woodcut would be. I don't know...

Annie

That sounds like the Union Square area. I don't live there but I exhibit my work at a gallery not far from there. I'll send an email to them and see what they say. I'm also friendly with the folks from Crown Point Press which is in a different part of the city but they're pretty up on things. Someone should know something.

Thank you Annie. Knowing that one of our first revered American heroes
did wood engraving is indeed interesting. I will hang in there, but
not with this contest. The woman in charge was extremely rude to me
and is obviously very pompous. I have enough going on in my life to
leave this behind and move forward in other directions. However, I
will send on this link to certain others involved in this who are
fighting to create a category that would be suitable for printmaking.

Jerelee, I am glad that Barbara and Maria are so wonderful and helpful
with a fine suggestion. Many of us have had years that are very
difficult, stick with it. I look forward to seeing your print when you
can get it finished. If you stick it out, hard times give you more
strength. And, you now know that you have wonderful friends here on
Baren.

Making 100 prints was an amazing experience for me as well. I agree
that the plate gets easier and the prints get better as one moves
along. Having a difficult year time wise I stuck to a one color print.
Time can be precious choose what you can do and do send them along.

The printmaker who is not either an artist or a craftsman will
continue to create prints.

Take care,
Marilynn

That's an interesting idea and I can see Revere being more comfortable in
metal than wood.

Well, that's a relief.
I managed to finish printing this afternoon. It took much longer than I anticipated.
I had decided to carve two versions on each block to cut down on printing but as I ended up with multiple blocks it still took almost a week of half-days to print.
Since I printed moku-hanga style there's just a day or so to let the paper dry before I can sign/number/trim and get them in the mail but I should be able to get them in even shipping them from this side of the Atlantic (Italy).

Glad to be done; I'm ready to move on to something else!
Something bigger and fewer.

I would like to have font set to compose texts. Rubber or wooden, could be
even metal.
any ideas? I was looking on ebay and there's nothing that satisfy me.

In '80s in Poland many people was preparing an underground/political texts
using some kind of children printing factory. Is there anything comparable
nowadays?

I knew I shouldn't've printed that last dragonfly.  The ink was getting gunky, but there was one more place on the strip.  Needless to say it won't see the light of day.

I'm fairly sure I printed enough for the exchange, given the occasional poor print.  I must say there were very few misprints, most of them pushing the ink past its nature.  I need to print 100+ prints more often.  ;- j

I'm glad we decided on 101 prints in this collection.  It's been an interesting and surprising experience printing so many.  I'll count them up tomorrow and make sure I have enough.

Then I'll cut them apart and start the arduous task of signing and numbering them all.  I left room to sign the front, but there really isn't enough room for the title, etc.  So I'll initial the front and sign the back.  Afterall, they are Artist Trading Cards, right?

Looking for defects.

Finished printing my Beetle print this afternoon. It took much longer than I imagined.
In this photo I'm looking over the nearly finished prints to look for any that need reprinting of the keyblock in the few prints where it didn't print dark enough and in the dozen or so in which I decided to print it last.
Each block took about 4-5 hrs to print so I spent the better part of a week printing-- one color by hand each morning. 5 blocks printed about 8 times for 80 copies=over 600 impressions.

No photos of the finished print tonight.
My camera batteries died and the scanner I have is so old it is no longer supported by my current computer.

But tomorrow I hope to upload some JPEGs of the finished prints.

Now it is just to let the paper dry; then sign, number, separate and trim the finished prints. But tonight I'll wash out the brushes and let the blocks air dry too.
