Subject: [Baren 44409] Thanks for the cute year of the Rabbit - Does printmaking exist?

I got a wonderful year of the rabbit card from Tasmania, Australia
yesterday. Thank you and thank you to all of you for your wonderful
cards. It is fun to get them trickling in through out the year.

I got into a battle over being a printmaker. I belong to an
organization that has an American Heritage Contest. They have several
categories under fine art, but not for printmaking. However, they do
have an area under their crafts section for Craft/Miscellaneous and
also for paper craft. I asked to submit my printmaking under one of
these categories. I was told NO, I can't submit my work at all.
Apparently printmaking is neither an art form or a craft. Whiteline
printmaking is NOT an American art form and does not exist. I was told
that there was no area for Pastels, yet they do have a section for
both Drawing and Painting. Seems, when I took drawing classes at the
University we used pastels as a drawing tool. But some do think of
them more as painting. So Yes, they do have a spot for pastels. But
the chairman of this committee does not think they do. I think of wood
block printmaking as both an art and a craft. Why are people so narrow
minded? Good heavens, I am invisible, my work is meaningless and
printmaking does not exist. Yet it would seem people like Picasso and
Durer and others were not doing any art or craft when they created
things like lino blocks, etchings and other forms of printmaking. They
were just little whiffs in the wind and all the books I possess
describing this art form are wrong it is neither an art nor a craft,
it simply does not exist.


Oh dear, have a good day I am going back to my studio to create more
prints, even though the world does not think the exist.

Maybe I missed it, but has anything been decided about the colophon for

Subject: [Baren 44412] RE: #50 Print Exchange/Request Extension for most of us

Dear Fellow Bareners in Exchange #50, I am requesting an extension for delivering my 101 prints to you. Unfortunately, I cannot finish my prints because of my horrible life circumstances. I am not a person who likes excuses and usually doesn't engage in them, however I am dealing with such a boatload of overwhelming family issues that I have not had the opportunity to finish. My mom is 90 yrs old and has alzheimers and has been lving in an assisted ling home where she was not been taken care of. Subsequently, she fell and broke her arm and pelvis. Since our exchange has begun, I have traveled to Maryland to Florida 4 times to take care of her and to empty her house which will forclose. This has taken me blocks of time that I normally would have worked on for Baren. Next weekend, I am flying to Florida and taking her back to a nursing home in Maryland where I know she can die in dignity. Concurrently, my sister has stage 4 cancer and I am emotionally a wreck. As a single mom to a 13 yr old, I am schlepping my kid to her activities which only adds to my 4 hour daily commute to work. (The washington DC area has the longest commute times in the country). I drive, take a commuter train, walk, and skip to work in the morning and this commute is 2 1/2 hours. What I am saying is I am physically exhausted. As an academic to college kids in an historically black University, my students are lving on the edge of society and trying to get an education and I am trying to teach them the best way I can ( this takes an incredibly long time since I correct essays on the weekends.) Please forgive me for not getting these lovely little prints to you. I am an extremly responsible person and know I owe you the time and effort that you also put into your prints, which will eventually be delivered to me. Oh, what joy I have had when prints arrive at my doorstep. Couild we extend the deadline to the end of the year? Is there a reason why it has to be November 1st? To be quite frank, I wish the exchange had been capped so a more realistic amount of time could have been devoted to them. Just because they are little doesn't mean it takes less time to print..
