I think that although Baren is a woodblock centered forum we have a lot of
printmakers with a wide range of experience in all different mediums of
printmaking. Personally I wouldn't mind intaglio questions thrown into the
mix. If this was a more website based forum we could just have a little
intaglio thread.

Elizabeth, I enjoyed your comments about being a Woman Artist. I have
always told people I am an Artist and now that I write for a magazine
say I am an Artist and a Free Lance Writer. I too went back to school
when my children were young and pursued the art degree. My husband was
always the one who viewed my art as a "hobby." It has taken him a long
time and some pay checks to finally see that it is my life work, my
passion and who I am. Women are more vulnerable to the roles we play
in life. Slowly the woman who stays home to raise her children is
being more and more recognized as a working member of our society. I
remember other women asking me at my husbands company gatherings, what
do you do?" I would say I am a stay at home mom. The response was
always the same, "Oh". And, they would turn away from me to talk to
someone else. It was like I was some kind of moron or useless being.
Other times having an art degree was considered a lesser degree than
say a business degree. Those people who think that way need to take
some art classes! I have always been proud to be a Woman Artist. I
have to say though, that my work does get pushed aside more quickly
than my husbands.

Life has many twists and turns in it. There are several things to keep
in mind as we pursue our work. First, it is extremely important to be
the person you are. It might be harder at times, but being soul less
just to make more money makes a person sad and often bitter. I also
firmly believe that it is a sin not to use your talents. My other
thoughts are that everyone has a talent, some for making art others
for fixing cars. Your place in the world is an important one. I agree
that few of us will make the big time museums or be recognized as
"great". But there is a reason you have been chosen to make art, so
declare that you are indeed an ARTIST. And fear not how others view
you. This goes for the male artists of the world as well!

To be fair and realistic, yes, there are times in life when one has to
make enough money to pay those darn bills. Many of us have been forced
to take jobs that are not art related. But, always that art is there
and most eventually find creative time. It does not matter whether you
spend 8 hours a day making art or have only a few hours here and
there. It does matter that you do it and make others realize that you
do.

Baren is a one of a kind and Baren people are very very special.

When people ask what I do I say I do artwork. Then they ask questions and
I am happy to answer. It works out very well that way with interest and
sales.

When I'm more confident about my art I project that to people. I tell people my art is important because I think it is. Of course I have to keep reminding myself of this. ;-j

I normally send my architectural photo bloggs to our parallel forum “after five”, but as this posting involves a replica Gutenberg printing press and a review of an old lino print it fits nicely into the main Barenforum criteria.
