i had expressed my interest in the tiny print exchange, but i'm not
sure if i'm on the list, because it was a long time ago. so, if my
name isn't on the list, could i please be added? also, i'd love to
make the complete set of 100 prints!

Subject: [Baren 43836] Some problems in first multicolor print attempt and oh yes, HELLO!
Send Message: To this poster

Hi there,

This is a wonderful site - I have read so many of your very helpful posts
for a long time, now I am finally getting started - here it goes with my
first attempt at actually doing prints. I am attempting my first multi
block color print and I guess the best way to start is just to describe what
I am doing and follow with a few questions for the problems I am having.

1.) The print I am working on is a 4 block waterscape, I am using both
Graphic Chemical perfection palette oil based etching ink and some Daniel
smith equivalent and Arches printmaking paper and a few other comparable
brands, I think all my paper is around 250 GM thickness. I have already
laid down the foundation layer of ink which is a rainbow roll of a sunset on
water. It is completely dry, I did the first layer last year. So I am now
over printing the clouds blocks onto the sunset - two blocks - one red and
one purple - so eventually this will be a three layer print i.e. in any one
area of the print no more than three layers of ink. The fourth block is just
a distant land horizon. I am carving in Baltic birch 13 layer 3/4" plywood
and printing in an etching press and using pin registration. The blocks are
12 x 17". I am not soaking the paper in water, just printing on dry paper.

The problem I am having, is that after running the first cloud block through
the press and overprinting the first layer of ink, along the edges of the
solid color areas of the red clouds, you can see the outline of the red, and
between the outline and going into the color field of the cloud layer there
is about 1/32" of an inch area of red ink that did not stick well to the
below layer of blue or yellow ink (sky and sunset). Also along the line
separating the fields of color - the fresh red ink that is, the ink line
seems to have some tiny dots or maybe some beading up just along the line
itself.

The large inner areas of red are sticking fairly well to the lower layer of
ink it is fairly uniform color distribution (although some small areas are
blotchy- not too bad though), but it seems that almost everywhere where
there is an outline of the red clouds against either the blue or yellow,
there is solid narrow red ink line along the edge, and between that line and
the larger area of inner red, the ink is not sticking as well as in the
center areas of the clouds. It is sticking some but not to the same
consistency of the inner areas of the red. The only exception to this
problem with the red clouds is where the cloud was over printed in an area
where the foundation ink layer of the rainbow roll is very thin.

At first I solved a few mistakes - originally I was using three blankets on
the press and the print was becoming embossed, so I thought that the
blankets were pushing the ink away from the edges, but after reading through
the baren list here I realized and then switched to just one pusher blanket
and placed Plexiglas on top of the paper block. I am also experimenting by
using a self healing cutting mat instead of the plexiglass. It did seem to
help a bit and I no longer have the embossing problem I had, and now the
above ink problem is not so obvious, there was quite an improvement, but
that above line problem is still there.

After switching to just one blanket, I thought the problem was that my ink
was too stiff and I used some number 3 burnt plate oil and that has also
helped some what, I also tried Miracle gel Reducer.

Although I was able to make improvements, I still have the same problem
whether the ink is stiff or cut with plate oil but the problem seems less
with the plate oil. The prints are coming out better, but you can still see
the line and ink not sticking problem

So...for my questions

1.) I am wondering if this is a problem that could be solved by using
either setswell or sureset? Or am I missing something else here? Am I
rollling the ink out too thick? Or is it too stiff? Should I be printing
on wet paper? I have tried both rolling out thinner and thinner layers of
ink...

2.) I read here in Baren that if using setswell or sureset, that I would
need to mix in the sureset or setswell in ALL the layers of ink including
the bottom first layer - which I did not do with the first layer...add
either setswell or sureset. Is this correct? Or is it OK to use either
setswell or sureset on all the rest of the upper ink layers, and ink over
the original layer that did not contain setswell or sureset?

3.) I have read here in baren about using rubber printer blankets for
offset printing as a tympan for doing block prints on an etching press i.e.
laying the blanket on top of paper and sandwiching it between the paper and
the pusher blanket. I will most likely try one out, but I was also
wondering if anyone has tried using a Fiskars or other brand rotary cutting
mat for the same purpose as the rubber, with any success?

4.) The original layer of ink I did last year in some areas is also kind of
blotchy or maybe kind of beaded up. It looks good, it's just not a
completely smooth, solid uniform or continuous color I expected. I just
printed the rainbow roll on blank paper so I am also wondering what would
cause ink to have tiny tiny beads in it or not be uniform - is this because
I printed on dry paper or something else I am missing?

OK I guess that is enough for today whew.

I want all the prints in number 50 too. Whoa, 100 tiny prints. But
doing Exchange 49 with a 5x7 has gone fast. They will go fast once you
have the carving!

I have enough prints for 49 done. Will print one more batch today just
to have a few for me.

I would be happy to make the full set of prints. I've been considering
carving it multiply (somewhere between two and four), which would be an
interesting challenge. I almost backed off from that when I saw the
possibility of printing fewer.

WOW! What a great response! The thought behind the smaller edition and group size was to not have anyone become overwhelmed by the idea of making 100 prints. However, since we are all a part of this enterprise, I do think we should put it to a vote.
You are voting on:
#1: I want them all! Let's make 100!
or-- #2: I'm prefer to be in a smaller group and make around 30.
As always, majority rules. If you don't vote, your voice is not heard.

**If you have signed up for Ex. 50, please respond to my email address imakeprints@hotmail.com and send me your vote on the edition size. (If you have already put your two cents out there prior to this message, I have logged your vote.)
By the way, we are now at 84 participants!
Let me hear from you--
Kristine

Would it be appropriate to send an announcement of our 'Inspired by Japan' project (with a link to the project website) to our mailing lists at this time? I imagine many members have mailing lists that are linked to museums, clients, art groups, etc. If it is okay to proceed, then I'm wondering if there is an image we can embed in our email to send.
Thank you.

I think so, lets spread the word...we have sold more on the web than at the opening, but many people said they would come back and look when they had more time..no one wanted to rush through it and it is up until the 18th. Our first thursday art walk in August must have at least 20,000 people spread over a mile square...it is a real crush. We gave away about 200 flyers and sold a few..so far we have raised $900, I hope for much more before this is done!

what shall we do if one artist's work sells out? I guess that is a good problem to have...I think I will contact artists if that happens and see if they are willing to make more prints. But since that is not happening right away I will worry about it later. I got so caught up in all the stuff for the benefit I thought I was late with #49.... but, Whew! the deadline is Sept 1st. Thanks goodness....I am printing but slowly.

If we get close to prints selling out I might take them down from the web so that we have a few sets left.

This next impression was one of the most difficult I have ever done. It's a multi-step process, similar to the grey undercoat of the hair: moisten the gradation zone, rub pigment over the block just nudging up to that area, wipe off the edge with a wet tissue, then gently feather the joint with an empty brush. But compared to the grey block, the gradation zone on this one is far narrower ... in places only a few millimeters wide. It needs a very steady hand when pushing that pigment forward ...

The next one was trivial in comparison ... one of the tones to give shape to the comb:

Tomorrow we'll start to add more actual colour ...
