RE: pricing on the Japan relief prints-
i disagree with the low price of 60 0r 45 , at least for the beginning
a 15 x 10 " print, IMHO ,should go for at least $75
it is BIG ! and hand done
i don't think we should give them away-
i printed an edition of my own here and
have them in the gallery for $85 matted
and $135 framed
a framed "Remember Japan" was just in a benefit auction here for the
200th anniv. town of LUBEC MAINE/WEST QUODDY HEAD LIGHT
i put a reserve of $135 and listed the value at $ 150
which i also did exactly the same for MAP MAKER (ex #48)
the silent auction was friday nite and both of the pieces sold
i have not heard for "how much"
but they had to have met the reserve of $135
there were lots of great paintings , prints and photos
in this auction with the many and varied artists on both sides of the canadian border
but i was told that many, many DID NOT sell
this is when it pays to be a printmaker :-) who can keep the the price low
i went only briefly and did not stay to listen to each sold piece be announced
it is about 30 miles away and i wanted to get home before dark
today i will pick up the work of other artists from my town whose work did not sell
on my way back from a tooth cleaning appt. also in Lubec
and i will find out the exact price my prints went for and pick up my share of $65%
while 35% goes to the Lighthouse fund
anyway - i say start at $75 for one- which is not too high !

I emailed you my colophon to your personal email address a while back, did
you receive it?
And I noticed that my print hasn't appeared on the website yet, I posted it
on 14th June so you should have received it by now. Do you have that too?

What's been going on?! No posts since May, I can't believe it. Well, I can, really, that's just the way artists are. I've been remodeling and catching up on home projects again and I seem to be a one-project-at-a-time person. The latest always available on my website, of course. But here is a print I just finished for a donation to the Japan Tsunami survivors. The prints will be available for sale and I will update when and where in the online world. All proceeds go to the survivors. Here is my contribution:  Print Title: Inspired by Japan Paper Dim: 10 x 15 inches Image Dim: 8 x 12.5 inches Block: Five cherry blocks Pigment or ink: Oil based Daniel Smith inks and shimmer-pearl pigment Paper: Rives Moulin du Gue Edition: 64 Comments: The theme ?Inspired by Japan? immediately brought images of cherry trees and cherry blooms, the ocean and the delicate legacy of Japanese prints. All those images are far from my usual work, but I decided that I would honor the Japanese in this dedication and try to work my image accordingly. I went to the web and immediately fell in love with the shape of a map of Japan. After printing out a bunch of cherry trees, blooms and maps, the image came together of the islands that compose Japan bathed in cherry blooms and buds, signifying beauty and renewal. The background was printed with shimmer-pearl and heavily embossed to simulate both ocean and the cherry wood I love to carve. A couple of details:  |

There have been a few arrivals patiently waiting for me to get my act together and publish them. Just for the record (I'm feeling defensive, I guess) the procedure when I get a new arrival is: -Email participant that block has arrived safely -Log arrival date in spreadsheet (oh yeah, I'm ultra-organized) -Open package, collect goodies :-) -Take about a dozen photos of newspaper spread and close-up of block -Transfer photos to computer, format and tweak, file -Blog about it SO! Subject: University of Tennessee

I am going to be starting graduate school at the University of Tennessee this fall (in about a month). �I’ll be going for an MFA in printmaking. Tennessee was definitely my top choice in school and it has a very close knit printmaking group. The school has a total of 9 print grad students and they accept 3 new incoming grads each year. Despite being a very small program UTK printmaking is ranked 4th in the country. And they have this amazing etching press with a press-bed that is literally 5 feet by 10 feet. This is all very exciting and nerve wracking. I managed to get a work study job in the University letterpress studio. This was a stroke of good fortune for me because I have letterpress experience so my new professors�recommended�me for it. Which has great pay, only requires 10 hrs a week and it�literally�in the same building as all of my classes/studio, oh and it’s an experience that I can put on my resume! Here is a picture of the letterpress shop. The have managed to fit quite a lot into a rather small room.
I have found a room in a sweet little shared house. Just South of Knoxville and across the Tennessee river. I’ll post some pictures of it as soon as I can. |
