Weird that Dave went to his stored blocks just yesterday to pick out
the right one for his project. Because I did exactly the same thing! I
sat down with no subject in mind, then it was right before me. Hope it
works as I need to get these exchange prints at least started!!
I wondered the other day if I'm the only crazy one out there. I
literally had a melt down. There has been NO art time since the fated
April 7th. Traveling helping, "mucking" out, unpacking, going to oh
gads two services for friends. I a minor mishap and could not stop
crying. I knew, because it has happened before, no creative time and I
crash. Since yesterday was our American 4th of July holiday I figured,
get in there and start on anything, just do something! I looked
everywhere for that unfinished block. Since I usually have few such
things it was impossible, but my art stuff got unpacked and my studio
in less of a mess. Now when the little guys arrive I have space to
play with them and space for me to play in! They can spend a few quiet
times in the art room with grandma. I am wondering how far to go with
that 6 year old, he already uses knives, kitchen knives. He also draws
very well. I am thinking on giving him a piece of lino, since he seems
way ahead of most 6 year olds. Am I crazy?
Marilynn, in sunny breezy Nahcotta, Washoington
Hi, Marilynn,
You've had a rough, rough time lately! It sounds as though
you're making a big effort to refind yourself as you move on!
That's important!
It's great fun to print with little guys! I taught
kindergarteners (in another, earlier life)!
Even thumbprints with rubber stamp ink can be fun. Use a
pencil, crayon or marking pen to turn those funny ovals or
handprints into critters by adding eyes, whiskers, hair, hooves!
Use Barbara Mason's wonderful torn masking tape technique to
make creatures! She uses roughly torn short bits of tape on a
base. The pieces can overlap and build up. Doesn't hurt a
thing! Kids can draw a shape on matboard and fill it in with
tape, or just put the tape on as they wish. Roll it up with a
charged brayer and PRINT! The feathers on Barbara's eagle were
wonderful!
You can do similar prints by gluing/pasting bits/shapes of
matboard down on a matboard base and inking it with a brayer. I
expect that the soft foam that craft stores carry or bits of
styro egg cartons would also work! --and don't miss the chance
to print on T-shirts...or pillowcases that they can use while at
'Camp Marilynn'! Set the ink, protected between paper sheets,
with a hot iron .
Use kid's clay or playdough (or potatoes and carrots)! Smoosh
it smooth, then draw in it or push things into it. Let it dry
(or not!) and ink it by pushing it onto a brayer-inked glass (or
paper plate). Then stamp it onto paper.
Paint on or print with things that you find on the shore!
Save up your Michael's (craft store) coupons, and have a great
time with those youngsters!
If troubled times teach us anything, they teach us to savor the
moments we can share!
Best wishes,
Sharen
Sharen, those are fabulous ideas. It looks like Marilynn will have a great time in her studio trying some of these things with the grandkids. In fact, I want to try some of these because printmaking is just plain fun, no matter how you do it. I have gotten away from the playfulness of it, and thank you for reminding us to think outside the box. I think people who work with children just know these things. I'll keep all this in mind for when Coleman comes to visit this summer. He's nearly eight now and quite the artist, himself.

Congratulations to our Annie Bissett for having her print on the front
page of the Journal of the Print World. I haven't had time to read
the article, yet, but I'm sure it says wonderful things about her!
Cheers ~
Sharri
Have we decided how much we're charging for individual prints outside of the collection?
Ellen
Ellen,
What do you think?
I am open for discussion on this...we talked about it but have not made a
definitive decision...
$75, $100, $50?????? Decrease of 10% for multiple prints? or something like this
And I think they will all be for sale individually with a portfolio included if
someone buys 10.
I don't think there will be many sales of the whole thing, but that would be
fabulous if there were!

Prints at last. I got half of them done today, half again tomorrow. I like the kozo paper.
Working well with two brayers, a large and a small, to add the greeny-blue tint to the center. I'm liking it.

Got three woodcuts ready for The Summer Art Festival later this month. I'm putting in Paleo-Umi, Paleo-Phoenix and Hippocampus. A mythical display.
