Tina, our member who arranged the portfolios for the benefit for Japan, just
send me this email... so don't order one, they will all be shipped to me and I
will send them out with the prints for exhibition and sale. I am half done with
my prints, or at least the carving part! Dick Blick will not be happy if we
bother him them after their generous donation to us!

While we are on the subject, is this to be a limited edition to the
exhibition prints? That is, should we or shouldn't we limit the edition to
31?

Hello Everyone,
I too am saddened by the cancellation of the Baren summit in San Antonio. It
will cost me money to cancel my plane fair. I thank Le Green for her hard
work and planning.
I do wonder however if this was necessary. Why are there "sponsors"? Indeed
why even a "show" of Baren work. Why plan meals and why schedule so many
activities? When Mike Lyon did our first summit in Kansas City it was a
great success. I do not remember "sponsors", I just remember being invited
to sleep on the floor of his studio. He sat a date and invited everyone who
wanted to come. I do not remember a list of activities, it seems things just
fell together.People came and wanted to share and they did. We seemed to
form into groups and do things we each wanted, we did not eat meals
together, except the last night we did have one big dinner out together.
(which was probably planned after everyone arrived). There could have been 6
or 60 and it would have worked. There were no expectations except that we
come and share. Numbers did not matter unless it was going to be too crowded
for his studio floor. I think there is a lesson in this. Why so much
planning, why does there need to be a certain number of people to make it
happen? I don't care if there is a show of work, I don't care if you provide
meals.I don't care if you take me to every museum in town. I don't care if
there is someone there to sell me art supplies.
The one and only reason I go to a Baren summit is to meet with other Baren
members. Once there I know they will share with me and many of my questions
will be answered. If you can't provide free accomodation than provide a list
of places to stay and provide a place to meet, period. (my husband always
says stay with the artists, you will be closer to the action) People will
come, maybe not 30, maybe 6, but it will happen. This can be stupid simple
and work very well, it is not a competition to have the biggest and bestest,
it is simply a gathering of artists with a common interest, woodblock
printing.
Le I am not upset with you, these are thoughts for the future. I can see how
easy it would be to get excited and want to provide the "best". I do
appreciate your hard work and I know you are disapointed. I wish you good
luck in all your future endeavors.
