I am sorry to say I can't make the Summit. I would love to but I put all my eggs into the 1st International Moku Hanga Conference in Japan, basket. I hope the Summit is a grand success for everyone going and for those planning it as well!
Dave- Thank you! It sounds like "bah-ren" is correct then, without accenting either syllable?
D.B.- The dogs do cause some problems, but hair is the least of my concerns lol! A few months ago, I came home to find my younger greyhound, Jack, had taken a brand new, un-opened bottle of BLACK Akua Kolor ink from my studio, chewed the top off, and dragged it all over the off-white bedroom carpet. He had emptied the whole bottle, and the ink had seeped deep into the carpet pile in 6-7 huge blotches. His face and legs were covered in ink, too. I could have killed him!! Since Akua is made to stay wet for long periods of time (for workability) I was totally freaked out that I'd have weeks/months of living on a wet black carpet! Thankfully hours of scrubbing, and a brand-new steam cleaner later-most of the ink came up, leaving light gray blotches (better than black, right?). The poor carpet will never be the same again, but I was very pleased at how great the Akua cleaned up from the pile (and thankful it was non-toxic, too! Jack is still happily around, causing more trouble than ever!). :)

Yes; for the most part Japanese words don't have stress accents on
syllables, the way we do in most western languages. Just keep it
'flat', and you'll be close.

Hi there. Ill assume this is working and other members will receive this
email.
Ive enjoyed doing woodcut prints for a while, off and on, but recently I'm
back into it with gusto because Ive set up a nice workspace in my house to
do it. It really made a big difference and Im excited about my new
projects.
In the past, and probably out of laziness and an aversion to cleanup, I used
water based inks. But I want to try oil based ink with a block I just
finished. Lets assume for now that I just need black ink. What is the deal
with the oil based inks that have something added to them so they can be
cleaned up with water? What brand should I buy?
And someone mentioned to me that it helps to varnish the block before I
apply ink to it, it helps prevent the ink from soaking into the wood. Do you
guys varnish your blocks? If so, what kind of varnish do you use?
If I can post a link to a picture here, this is the block ready for printing
(unless I do varnish)...

Can, someone tell me what the message below is? It appears to be related to
Exchange #44 but none of the links take you anywhere.
Thanks, Robert

Robert,
sadly it is some kind of spam...there is no way to keep it from the exchange
return mail, so we just delete it. I have been getting them for years from
exchange 22 and I just delete without opening them. There is no way to fix it
without turning off the automatic responder.
My best
Barbara
Hi, Robert... I've gotten these every so often. They are spambots that
generate that kind of message. It's unfortunate but just delete them rather
than trying to follow links.
I don't pipe in here very often but I wanted to let all the tiger participants
know that I will be printing my very, very late tigers when I get back home the
end of this month and the rabbits will follow shortly.
And I would like to welcome all the newcomers to Baren. It's a great place to
share and grow as an artist, especially from the exchanges where we can all
touch, smell, feel some wonderful work. And, as Terry said, if you can make the
Summit you will never regret it. The last one was where I leapt fearfully into
wood. If I hadn't attended the Summit I'd still be working exclusively in
lino. It's a great even for stretching yourself...
I can't wait to open the latest exchange prints. Based on everyone's glowing
comments, it will be quite a treat. And I'm really anxious to get started on my
puzzle block. Thanks, Maria, for all you do for us!
Lastly, I wanted to say that I visited the Print Room at the Spencer Museum and
they graciously pulled out a couple of past Baren exchanges for me. I also got
to see about a dozen woodcuts of Herschel Logan, one of my heros, as well as
some Grant Wood prints already out on the viewing table. If ever in Lawrence KS
you can make an appointment to view work or you can drop in without an
appointment on Fridays. What a treat! And what wonderful caring people.

Hi, I mostly lurk on Baren, but I thought I'd chime in here --
I coat blocks before printing with clear shellac, wiped on with a rag. I
find it makes cleanup much easier.

Geez, I miss my Mac. Can't get this computer to respond to Marias website.
Maria I will not be around to let you know if the block arrives. Won't make
it back to the northern home until late May or June. Will let you know
then. Loved the part about small pets eating the blocks. My new dog, Dani,
got on the night stand, next to the bed, took my plastic case away that
holds my ear plugs. He chewed the case open and ate 4 ear plugs. Last week
he got into my husbands gas x pills, ate some and had a bad stomach ache
for a few days. Guess I will have to keep him out of the studio.Perhaps we
should have an exchange about impish animals? Can't help being off subject.
To go on subject, my year of the rabbit block is nearly finished, yeah!!!
Should have it all printed before we go north.
Marilynn
Ha! Your impish Dani made me laugh. I'm sure we all have stories to tell. I think an exchange based on impish animals would be great! Over on a fiber list I frequent they're currently discussing adventures with cats and rabbits. ;-]

Check out Graphic Chemical who have a good assortment of inks for us guys in the printing sport .... www.graphicchemical.com/

If you use petro base inks .... varnishing is not necessary.
For water base pigments .... the recommended use of a protective coating is 50% Velspar Varnish mixed with 50% oil (Tung oil) or comparible furniture oil. This formula comes from Noboru Sawai in turn from Toshi Yoshida.... whew, heavy credentials. Once applied use 300 grit sandpaper after the varnish has sunk in for a few minutes.

Hi Terry,
It was great to meet you at the last Summit. It was a ton of fun and
it wasn't until the event was over and I was in the Dr's office that I
learned I had had pneumonia. From a chest xray they said, "Well, it
looks like you are doing an effective job of curing yourself of
pneumonia. You're almost there, so we won't give you anything for
it. Good luck." At that point, because someone said I was sick, I
was, and immediately went home and went to bed for a couple of days.
Unfortunately, (for me) I won't be coming to San Antonio. It sounds
like it is going to be a wonderful event and I hate to miss it. You
all who go will have to take pictures and post them to the blog, so
some of us can attend vicariously. In a few years I will have
convinced myself that I was there and no one will be able to dissuade
me. The human brain is an amazing thing, and the tricks it plays in
later life are truly amazing, as I am finding out!
I'm excited about the Mythological Exchange, too. I am about half way
through the line block. It seems that shortly after I start carving
my nose starts running. From then on it is a contest to see if I can
carve more, or drip more. This is a relatively new experience and I
am wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the cherry
blocks from McClains? I had been using regular cherry lumber, but the
remaining part of the board I have is cracked and has a knot and I
couldn't find a place large enough for this exchange. So, I ordered
the cherry plywood. Maybe it is just coincidence, or maybe it is the
glue they use, or maybe I just have a new allergy to add to my
pantheon of offending substances.
Welcome to all the newcomers, and hello to all the oldcomers.
Cheers,
Sharri
PS - I pronounce Baren as Bah-ren, and then sometimes I pronounce it
Baron. I try to alternate it so I am right half of the time. It
works for me.
Dear Baren Artists,
This is a very trying time for our friends in Japan, even those who live far
from the actual disaster are upset and waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I heard on CNN from one of their seismologists that the quake moved the entire
island of Japan 8 feet and actually moved the earth on its axis several
degrees. This is a world wide trauma. Japan will recover due to sheer grit and
determination but it will be affected for many years.
We did a portfolio for fundraising after 9-11 but we were not that successful at
selling it to raise funds. I suggest we do another one but find an organization
to sell it. I tried Mercy Corps but they just brushed me off, I am going to try
the Portland Japanese Gardens next.
If anyone has an in with a disaster relief program, contact them and we will
find a way to really make a difference with our artwork.
I suggest the oban size, 9.5x14.5 inches or 10x15" and 30 prints. This will be a
selling point, that they prints are large. I think any image that is inspired by
Japan will work, it does not have to be about the current tragedy. Celebrating
the strength and tenacity and beauty of Japan will give us many images to chose
from. I have already decided on an image, which is half the battle for me. It
can be moku hanga or western printing. No limits of this except it should be
relief since that is who we are.
I will coordinate the prints and put them in portfolios. I am no good at doing
the sign up pages, so if you want to participate email me and I will put you on
the list. When Julio gets back from vacation he might do the page for us..if I
did it who knows what you might be signing up for.
I suggest that all the prints should be in my hands in two months, so around
the end of May or early June. The last edition we did ended up in the New York
Public Library collection, so we got a real thanks for our good deed. Maybe this
one will do so as well. Lets see if we can get a full compliment of barenforum
printmakers to make this happen. Do your best work, it is for the most worthy
of causes. I will keep you posted on the Japanese Gardens, they have a lovely
store and think they will be most anxious to help us do this.
My very best to you all

This is a great idea, Barbara!
I would certainly be interested in participating.
Marketing and finding the niche to sell and raise $$ will be a challenge, I think, though I know very little about this kind of fundraising.

The block so far...............
The lettering's going ok, given that maple isn't quite as good for tiny detail as other woods but the style of lettering is fairly flexible anyway. I'm really enjoying doing this and time has flown this afternoon. I've put my typescale next to the scan to show you how big it is overall.

Here are the rest of the process pictures. Second day I decided to work on the grass on the other side of the house. Two reasons: one, I now bother the OTHER neighbor with my incessant jig-saw noise; and two, the wind was blowing and I didn't want to get cherry dust on my front porch.
Here we go...
