Well, both of those objections are easily dealt with! Bring the
family on board - that will take care of copyright issues, and re-cut
new blocks, leaving the originals available for study. Not to belittle
him - because his work was very original - but the physical job of
cutting replacement blocks for his kind of prints would be very easy.
It's on my own 'to do list' to do some Phillips reproductions,
although of course it will have to wait until his copyright has
expired. (That's only four years from now here in Japan, but over in
Canada it's 24 years away, and given that my market is global, it
seems that I'll be waiting a long time ... :-)

Today is clear, beautiful and the sun rise over my adored Willapa Bay
is gorgeous. Life is good. This post will not be about printmaking
so for those who do not wish to read on ignore my ramblings.
I have recently been involved in a rather ugly situation. I asked a
group of people who had emails forwarded to me, via a joke, a simple
question, nothing rude, just a question. After asking it I received 2
emails containing profanity and several others that called me various
nasty names. I also lost what I thought was a friend for over 20
years. Where am I heading here? Well THANK YOU ONE AND ALL for being
intelligent civilized human beings. I have been a Baren member now
for many years and have attended both previous summits and if all goes
as planned I will be at the next one. Our founder and other members
of our Baren counsel have ruled us over the years with great wisdom.
There you go Dave, another thought for your round table, you possess
wisdom from your years of life experiences! We have been told that we
should stick to printmaking discussions when posting (oops I am off
subject and apologize). There are a few common sense rules to keep us
flowing onward, like please post only once a day, do not be rude to
others. (personal attacks are forbidden). I have been following a few
of our recent discussions and I must say every one has been worthy of
a good read. What an amazing and wonderful group Baren has been and
continues to be. We are leaving a great legacy behind in our
encyclopedia, our numerous discussions and our print exchanges. That
legacy would not be possible if we lowered ourselves to speaking nasty
words to one another. I love it when one person has a conflicting
opinion and speaks their mind. It can certainly make one stop and
think. And think is the word, stop, think and post intelligent
responses that stick to the subject at hand and show that you have a
good mind. Through the years almost all of you have done exactly that
and as a result this list has grown and flourished.
At times I have been a bit "difficult". I wish to apologize for being
temper-mental at times. Each of you on our council works very hard to
keep order and make this a wonderful group of artist 'friends". It is
a privilege to know each one of you special people. THANK YOU HARD
WORKING MEMBERS.

Subject: A Visit to Mokuhankan - Part One

A busy street in Tokyo, on the sidewalk outside Mokuhankan (moku han kan), the woodblock printmaking shop/studio run by long-time Tokyo resident David Bull. Dave will be giving an interview today to a reporter from a media organization, and this person has just called on their cell phone to say that they are on the way from the nearby subway station. Dave has stepped outside to wait, and the guest now arrives. They exchange name cards, as tradition dictates, and today's conversation then begins ... Dave: Thank you for coming along today; I'm glad that you could find time to visit us. Shall we go inside? Guest: Just a minute please. Before we do I'd like to ask you about the sign! Dave: (laughs) Yes, everybody seems to be interested in that. Here in Japan, everybody knows what a baren is for, so what better symbol could there possibly be for Mokuhankan? Guest: Well yes, but not many of us have ever seen a three-meter wide one before! It looks a bit dangerous, hanging up there on the front of the building! Dave: Oh, there's no danger; we made it from fiberglass, and it's quite light. Our major concern was making sure it was fastened securely enough that it would survive major storms. So far, so good ... And it certainly does its job - every person who passes down this street knows we are here, and what we do! Anyway, please come in ... It's still early, so the shop hasn't become . . . |

Subject: Raucous Auction Tomorrow!

 Tomorrow afternoon is the Virginia Artist Book Center's annual fundraiser "Raucous Auction"! Check out the official link: Virginia Artist Book Center It's a good opportunity to celebrate our new space and settle in as we shake the dust off our shoulders. From 5:30-8:00pm a good time will be had by all and we'll try to raise some funds to keep our our type clean and presses moving! The above poster was printed on the VABC Vandercook with wood and lead type that is part of the collection. Ain't printmaking grand?  Here's a shot of the moving guys getting the VABC's C&P Job Press into the new space. At first I thought it was my press because I saw the characteristic inking disk at the top. (It looks like a big silver dinner plate.) But then I saw the network of metal feet at the bottom and realized it was my press' big brother instead. These things weigh a lot and are really hard to maneuver. Shake it don't break it boys. . . |
