Alex, your work is indeed beautiful. The one thing I would wonder
about is how long the linen will last with the pigment printed
directly onto it? I studied oil painting and the reason one primes the
canvas is that it will rot without primer. The inks we use may not
cause this damage as we are not using linseed oil, but I would wonder
about it? There have been oil painters that have painted on unprimed
surfaces knowing the work will have a short live span.

Wow, Alex, beautiful work! Did you use oil-based ink?

Fantastic idea. It looks great. How heavy is it? Too heavy to frame?

I am also a little curios about the this but i since we don't prime
our paper it seems like it would be comparable but i really have no
idea.
Alex i love the print and your plans for display will be very
attractive and cost effective. i am jealous of your friends press!

Send Message: To this poster

Hi all,
I decided to experiment with white line on linoleum instead of wood
this time. the first thing i learned was watercolor will not work (the
whole oil/water thing). I had a pretty good idea that would be the
case but i wanted to try anyway. so i went back to the water soluble
crayons and they worked just fine. I "painted" the entire piece then
spray misted it and ran it through my small etching press. repeat. I
like the embossing the press is able achieve on the Rives BFK that i
can not do by hand. i also rendered this piece way more then my
previous images the crayons are very easy to blend with your fingers.
this is an image i never would have attempted using multiple books
because i am just not willing to carve 10 or more blocks per image.

My favorite brand is Caran' D'Ache Neocolor II they seem a little
softer and a bit easier to blend but i also have Lyra and Staedtler
Aquarell Crayons which are also very nice really not much different
all work great and i use them together. I don't see why linen wouldn't
work I will have to try that next.

Diane & Georga

The ink I used for printing on linen was Block Print Black oil based ink by
Graphical Chemical & Ink Co.

It's the first time I've ever used that ink so I didn't know what to expect.
Normally I would use Sakura Oil based inks.

When the print was completely dry, I could still rub the cloth and some ink
would come off onto my hand so I got out the Scotch Guard and sprayed some
of the fabric. A few minutes later it was completely sealed and no ink came
off.

I will be honest though, I've been making it up as I go for this whole
process seeing as this is the first time I've tried doing all this.
Alex.

white line woodblock print on Rives BFK

I used linoleum for this print. watercolor definitely would work on linoleum (i tried that first just to see) but the water soluble crayons worked great!
I used water soluble crayons (they are very easy to blend with your finger tips) then spray misted the block and paper and printed using a my small etching press. I like the press because it gives a nice even print and the white lines are nicely embossed.
