Jenny,

I had not thought about whether they would be archivally sound. They
should be non toxic, we do use them on our babies bottoms.

Any chemists in the group?
Listed ingredients are:

water, Aloe Babadensis, Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Polysorbate, Disodium
Cocampodiacetate, Tocopheryl Acetate (sounds suspicious),
Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Quaternium-15,
Potassium Sorbate, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid

I googled most of these and quite a few are preservatives,
interesting. Not sure the would affect archival papers. wondering
about Citric Acid.

Isn't it just amazing at all the 'chemicals' that they put into products these days? Geez.

Actually, I was advised by a fabricator of luxurious leather bags and
goods to clean their products with baby-wipes - they work beautifully and
also clean leather shoes etc - horrifying to think they are used on
babies bottoms?!!

Are massive voids common in Luan ply? When I say "void," I mean the
knife feels like it's fallen through the floor and I'm left with a hole
where my drawing should be.

I'm working through a pile of Luan I bought from Blick, and I'm not very
happy.

unfortunately yes...Luan is ugly as it splinters for me. I hate using it, I use
the all shina plywood from Mcclains and am a happy girl.

The first woodcut print I did was on Luan in a workshop offered through our local art museum. We carved with the museum's tools. Should I mention they were dull? During the workshop's second day, students used instructors' slightly sharper tools.

I didn't know any better and was hooked on the process and materials. I began ordering supplies. I was thrilled to get my own carving tools and to try Shina plywood, which was much more forgiving. I'm eager to learn more about the medium and look forward to reading about other people's experiences.

cheers,
Lori

When you want a solid striated shape within your image Luan will do it
.Also superimposing luan shapes makes for surprising results. Used that way I
think you'll like it.

Subject: River Water

Recently another printmaker suggested using actual water from the Shiawassee in the making of the prints for this series. I don't know why I didn't think of that! It adds a special dimension to the prints.
So, on a very chilly (58 degrees) July morning here in Michigan, we set off to Curwood Castle Park to collect water. I grew up 3 houses from the Castle. This view of the Shiawassee was my view.

We ran the water through our Katadyn filter that we use backpacking.
