Subject: Papermaking and printmaking tour in Japan

The Educational Study Trip III in Japan (February 2010)

The Third Educational Study Trip is taken place in Japan in February
2010, arranged with ViaJapan Holidays (UK). The trip consists of 11
days (from 14-24 February, 2010) in Tokyo, Fukui, and Kyoto.
Objectives for this trip are to provide the opportunity to
understand Japanese papermaking and printmaking. The participants
will acquire deep understanding of (1) the characteristics of
Japanese paper through a papermaking workshop and visits to
different papermaking mills and 2) Japanese woodblock printing
techniques and materials (e.g. use of Japanese paper) through a
workshop. The tour also includes various paper/print related visits
and provides a unique experience in Japanese culture by travelling
around countryside.

Julio's ideas for carving blurry areas works. But, for doing large areas
of soft irregular areas it is acceptable to paint them on the paper
directly. I've seen many such watercolor additions to woodblock prints, but I
don't do that. I prefer to keep watercolor and woodblock print techniques
totally separate.

Always wondered if it would work using either a sanding technique to
slope the edges or I have used a sharp pointed tool to "stipple" the
edges. Risky, but it did soften the "look" of the edge.

I am thinking for an eclectic printmaker a photo or solar plate for that background might work. It would be consistent printing and then you could print the woodblock on top. Carol in Montana
