I hope it is not for fear of punishment or public humiliation for being late in an exchange. this was my fear when the whole discussion about "cracking down" on people for being late in the exchanges that went on a few months ago. As a have said before, i would rather have a full exchange with a few drop outs and it arriving a little late, than to have people not sign up at all for fear that life might happen and they get a little behind on the exchange and be banned or made to feel bad for tardiness.

LOL, I will scrub scrub scrub in the bath for ideas! Seem to be
posting a lot today, forgive me, this time I have a need, HELP. I was
off carving that block of mysterious wood. Now that I am clearing it
is chipping like mad, it is splintering off the tips of my design.
Since this will be an oil based print, I could oil the block to help
with the splintering. I don't do this, so if I do what is the best
oil to use???? I have carved cherry, maple and my favorite myrtle
wood with no splintering problems, so it must be the wood. If oiling
is not the solution what is??

Hey Mike, glad to see you are thinking on merging facebook with our
list, maybe this is a good move after all, if it bunkers up our
exchanges it will be a good addition.

If it's splintering that badly I doubt if oil (boiled linseed oil) will halp too much.  Can you try thin superglue?  or some other glue or a varnish.

I have used shellac heavily, almost feels like printing on more of the
shellac than the wood, but it stopped the splintering (but I lost most
of the wood grain).

I'm excited by the 3 x 9" format for exchange 42 and it's part of why I
signed up. It's a chance to work with different proportions than I'm used
to, plus it's small. I know I can do the edition with paper I already have,
or I can take the opportunity to try a new paper without a huge investment.


May I ask a copyright question? I'm planning a series of woodblock prints
based on a favorite novel. The images are totally my own, but I'm using
characters (my interpretation of what they would look like) and some events
from the novel. Is this fair game as far as copyright is concerned, or do I
need permission from the author? I will refer to the novel in my titles
and/or descriptions, so I will be acknowledging where my inspiration is
coming from.

As for sources of inspiration, I find it in many places-- a book, a line
from a song, simple things I find beautiful, nature, my kids. A great place
to work out ideas is in the shower, especially after exercise when I still
feel energized. As a mom of a toddler and a newborn, the shower is also one
of the few places where I'm every alone!

I used Mike's link to FB where I read that to join Baren Forum I first had
to "Sign Up" with Facebook. And to do that I had to give them my birthdate.
Many of you are not bothered by that but I am. I could lie about the date
but they say I have to put my "real date of birth". Why?? Are they going to
do my horoscope and see if I have enough integrity for their website? To me
this is way invasive and indicative of FB's ugly ulterior motives.

To join barenforum.org (and receive the digest) I had only to give my email
address and be polite. To join the baren exchanges I had only to work my ass
off and come through on time, which any exchange managers will tell you I
did. I can't stop this changeover to FB but I wanted to voice my sadness
over this sounding of what is to me a fascist note.

Never give them your real birth date. They only want to know if you are
over 18. It's none of their business, and it is dangerous.
Even the DMV thinks I still weigh 130 pounds.

Dave Bull suggested the Facebook group be renamed "Friends of Baren Forum
for Woodblock Printmaking" in an effort to reduce confusion among Bareners
who are not friends of Facebook... This has been done.

In order to join the group you must have a (free) Facebook account. If you
don't care for Facebook, don't join! Personally, I've found it to be a
GREAT way to keep up with my kids, my karate friends, my artist friends, my
'normal' friends.

Oddly, my current 'project' is a series of portraits of artist friends and
acquaintances. About ten so far have agreed to 'sit' for me here in my
studio. ALL were invited to sit using FACEBOOK correspondence. Peregrine
Honig was the first shoot for the project -- I sent her a contact sheet of
16 (of 349 photos shot as she bounced on a small trampoline here in my
studio -- what a HOOT) and she 'appropriated' my favorite shot for her
current Facebook profile image at
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=701514666&hiq=peregrine -- what a
HOOT and reminds me about recent copyright discussion -- she didn't ask,
just put it up there! It's a nice shot, but I usually prefer the drawings
and paintings and woodcuts I make from photo images to the photos
themselves.

Anyway, I've written this to sorta let skeptics know that MY experience in
Facebook has been quite positive and some unexpected benefits are accruing
from my associations on Facebook, just as they accrued from the
relationships which developed (are developing) here on Baren...

It's all good, I think!
