I used to like Iyo Glazed paper from Utrecht before it got so expensive.
It's a nice bright white color, but it has warmth. It's a little bit stiff
when it's dry but wonderfully pliable when damp. It has plenty of sizing,
so the colors sit on it just great. It was what they recommended for block
printing.

I love Magnani Pescia for ink printing. I use the cream because I just have this thing about white paper. Don't like it. Magnani Pescia prints beautifully and just feels right. For some reason "buttery" is the word that comes to mind. I also use BFK.

For Moku Hanga: I have tried several papers from the Baren Mall and been happy with them all. All in the $6-10 range. My favorite by far is Azusa. I don't have a problem with it swelling over days of printing and being wet. Love the off white color of it. It's strong but a lighter paper than some others. I've also used Kihada, Kihada Light (using it now with really good results), Kurimi, and a couple others. I use either shin torinoko or masa dosa for proofing.

I use good quality watercolours for Moku Hanga.

I only do Moku Hanga, so my paper choices only apply to that.

Pads of Hosho: 50 sheets in a pad. Roughly Oban/A3 size. I cut them in half
to get Chuban/A4 sized paper.

Purchased from ‘Intaglio Printmaker’, London, UK, by mail order.
http://www.intaglioprintmaker.com/default.asp

It’s a good basic paper for waterbased printing, but does tend to scuff if
you do too many impressions, or if the paper is too damp.

If I’m doing a number of impressions over the same area (more than 3) then I
print with a sheet of waxed paper (bought at any homeware/cookery store)
between the baren and Hosho which improves things hugely.

At £9.50 (about $7.00) for a pad, it’s really good value and highly
recommended for learning the craft, you can afford to make mistakes, which
gives you the confidence to try new things.

I also have sheets of Hosho paper from Mr. Ichibei Iwano which I’m going to
use for my next print. I finally feel confident enough to use this beautiful
handmade paper, available through the Baren Mall.

I’ve managed to keep my papers in order and labelled. They include Shin
Hosho (no 23), Kihade Light (No 8) and Azusa (No 9), all from ‘Woodlike
Matsumura’ via Baren Mall. I also use the Hanshita paper, which is perfect
for transferring designs onto the block as the thin Hanshita paper is stuck
to a peelable second, stronger piece of paper which is removed after the
Hanshita has been pasted to the block.

I use any western style paper for test printing the blocks, prior to
proofing, mainly using the Hosho paper Pad.

Regarding colour pigments, I use Kaimei Bokuju sumi ink from McClain’s for
the blacks and infinite number of greys. It works really well, and smells
nice too.

For colour I use Winsor and Newton Artist’s Watercolour in tubes and Dr.
P.H.Martin’s Hydrus Fine Art Watercolour ( a Pigment dispersion, not dyes).

Most of my prints to date are small, so these colours work well, but, as has
been mentioned by Mike, I think, it would be an expensive route if you plan
to do large scale, or long run prints.

They are a good choice for learning. Easy to work with, very good quality
and available in any art store.

Cheers,

Mark.

After my last post back in April, I had a birthday party with a surprise band, video and present. Lots of dancing and such a memorable event. Then my real birthday came, and we celebrated at Founders brewery, where a poster contest for a local organization was taking place too. I had submitted an image, since it was going to be at the same time and place as my b-day celebration/give-away.As if all
