Marilynn,
I put only my email address on the card because...who uses snail mail
anymore (except for exchanges)? Please send me one of your cards. My address
is on the original list.
Peace,
Eileen
Benny, this is what is stated on the Baren list about the new years
cards: Baren Forum began sponsoring its annual New Year's Card
Exchange for the 2000 new year and has continued this popular exchange
in each subsequent year. The exchange prints are to be designed around
that year's Chinese Zodiac Animal. Each year, members sign up by
providing their name and mailing address, then print and mail a card
to every other participant by mid-February of the new year. Prints
should be about 4 x 6 inches and may be in any media (not limited to
woodblock). There is no 'moderator' -- you are on your honor to mail a
print to each person on the list just as each of them are on their
honor to mail one to you.
So, yes technically the exchange would be over as the request is that
the cards be mailed by mid February. In reality this exchange goes on
all year long. Perhaps I'm over exaggerating when I complain as I got
about half the cards and about half the year is gone, so perhaps the
rest will float into my mail box as the year keeps going. I probably
would not have noticed except for the fact that I opened them all at
once and geez the pile was sure smaller than the pile of prints I
brought back to mail out. I do have to admit that it is fun getting
them through out the year and I am hardly on time myself.
In reality my thought is if we all just send to those who send on time
or send to us than eventually we won't have an exchange at all. This
is casual and many do take even into the next year to get their cards
out. They are always wonderful and very appreciated. I am truly
wondering how many on this list are over 2 years out and need to make
up say 3 or more years worth of cards? Because those are the folks who
will probably never send any. There intentions may be good but in
reality they are not doing the honorable thing. And, I wonder how
large a number this might be, given that I have received only 25 cards
and 54 are on the list??? I would not mind say 10 percent not doing
the "honorable" thing, but over 50 percent is ,well not a good thing.
Put it this way, I am greedy I want them ALL. Because, they are so
much fun and they are wonderful little prints. Maybe I m over
reacting, I just don't know because I don't know how many total
slackers there are?? So, I am still thinking about how I should do
this, only send to those who send to me or just mail to the whole list
and hope the will get back to me?
The other thing is I know of some who mailed out year of the rat cards
and I sent them one, late as always. I never got one in return, I
guess I was excluded from their list because of being tardy. I guess
that is their right as I was not on time. So my next thought is I
should not do tis exchange, but I LOVE it. Oh well enough dribble.

i just wanted to put in my two cents about the chinese new years card exchange.
to me, if i get the card during its designated year, it is "on time". i actually like the fact that cards come all during the year. it is always such a pleasant surprise to find one nestled among the bills and unwanted fliers i receive in the mail. if they all came at once i don't think i'd appreciate them as much.
the first year i did the exchange i kept diligent track of who sent me cards, but over the years i've come to realize that it doesn't to me how many i get. i enjoy the ones that come and hope that those who receive mine feel likewise.
the informality of the exchange is what i appreciate. i find my creative ebbs and flows don't always come when i want them too. i actually stopped doing the formal exchanges because i felt like i was too under the gun to produce, and the last one i did i ended up sending out art that i thought was not that good just to meet the deadline.
for what it's worth, those are my two cents!
happy printing...

Hi, All - I have really enjoyed getting my ox cards in the mail - diligently on time or dilatory not. Thank you very much you all. I have shown them to people and got some good comments on the range of styles and treatments. Kudos to all! Keep 'em coming! Sincerely, Carol Montgomery, Helena, MT
I for one am having a terrible time with my Ox-hence none of them have been sent yet. I've drawn out four blocks and hated every one, so I keep starting over. I know theoretically what I want, it just isn't happening yet. The same thing happened with my Dog and Boar prints-which were very late. Others, like the Chicken or the Rat, just seem to be Kismet and magically flow and were delivered a head of schedule. Anyway, I guess I would vote for reasonable patience and make sure that if you signed up that you deliver with in that year even though I know the guidelines are what? February?? Anyway, my brain doesn't seem to be firing at full speed so I hope this is comprehensible. Only six days till I bid my student goodbye for the summer and I revert to Monica instead of Mrs. Bright all the time...but whose counting??

Brad,
I agree and one year sent two new years cards together I was so late. I always plan to be on time, but life gets in my way. I am too overcommitted and also rarely do the formal exchanges now. And to top it off I lost the last on in the mail but it was finally returned to me so now have "extras' to give away at demos. I will do mine before the next one is due...if all goes well. So do not despair folks, mine will arrive eventually!
My best to all
Barbara

I know a second post in one day. I wanted to lay this year of the
animal thingy to rest. So, I did my homework and went into the year
of the rat gallery and found 17 people who had not as of yet mailed
out ox cards who are in the "rat" gallery. I am also pretty certain I
have a few cards from that year who are not in the gallery. So the
good news is we are for the most part being very very good and very
honorable. So my next group of cards will go out to those folks.
Than I will wait and see for the rest of you. I am slowly weeding out
the ones who are not sending cards and fortunately the number may be
around the 10 percent that I find not really a big deal!!!
CONGRATLATIONS BAREN MEMBERS YOU ARE INDEED HONORABLE FOLK. Aren't we
amazing? And I will say I am glad I checked it out so we all know.

Here's another view on the Annual Calendar aka Ox exchange: I've
enjoyed doing this exchange and print my cards and mail them with
little regard for who has sent what and when. I trust that everyone
who signed up for the exchange will eventually get around to sending
me one of their prints and if they don't I will assume they have a
very good reason and not question it. I do not keep track of who has
sent and who has not - I don't have time for that. I will admit that
the bill at the post office is becoming a bit steep and wonder how
much longer we can get people to participate, but one way to lessen
that bill a tiny bit would be to actually print post cards and
dispense with the envelope. Just let the postal handling and markings
become part of the art. Personally, I feel that if you are going to
worry so much about who you get cards from in return then (and I do
not mean this in a mean spirited way) then maybe you shouldn't
participate in this particular exchange. It is a relaxed format and I
enjoy that cards come throughout the year and maybe even a year or two
after. I think this is the attitude you need to adopt if you are going
to be a part of this kind of exchange. There is no deadline. Life gets
in the way - people will be late. Throw your tit-for-tat list away.
Relish each print as it arrives. Relax and go with the flow – C'est la
vie.
Cheers ~

well said, Sharri. I even got an OX card from someone, and I'm not signed
up for the exchange. this Baren is good people! (I would send you this
personally, but I'm still not allowed to communicate with the comcast server
for some breaucratic reason)
there's lots of us that still use postal service, and enjoy feeling letters
in our hands, Eileen. especially if they are hand written!!!!
I'm getting tired -- yawn-- of techies making these
degrading comments about snails. I pray that this will be my LAST comment
on this, as life is really too short. :o)

I never kept count, well...except maybe the first year. After that, I
didn't. I stopped doing them, though, because I realized I was
getting later and later with my cards and I didn't want to be one of
the late ones all the time. Also, for me, I found hand burnishing
that many prints was becoming less fun. Don't get me wrong, I
loooooved getting the cards. I just was ashamed I wasn't being
timely, and was almost not looking forward to doing the work every year.

Thanks, Marilyn, for explaining the Ox Exchange to me. You are kind to be
so nice.
I used to send out ny cards (hand embellished ink drawings zeroxed onto
shiny card stock) every year with the conforting thought that they were never
late. When my mailing list got large and my life busier, I stopped. So I
understand the humor in the philosophy! I'll keep quiet from now on.
I'll not ever participate in a new year's exchange but wish everyone who
does it has fun.
Thanks again.
