I will be teaching a class in Moku Hanga, Japanese woodblock, at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz again in a few weeks, the weekend of June 6 and 7. Details are on the Cabrillo website at http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/extension/creative.html

Then June 15 to 19 I will be teaching a week long class in Portland, Maine at MECA.

It would be great to see any of you!

On a personal note, I wanted to let everyone know that my mother died of a stroke on April 27. The obituary is at http://thurbergulch.com/obit She was an accomplished artist, and I am happy that I was able to attend and to document the extensive show she had last year in Santa Cruz http://thurbergulch.com/candids/attic/

Best wishes to all,

April

Fascinating link Eileen sent. When the piece comes to the Kimball I will
make sure to go see it.

I received my Exchange 40 prints a day or so ago - thank you everyone! They
are of course beautiful. This was my first baren exchange and I can't wait
to participate in many more. I'm finding that without an exchange to keep me
motivated, I am letting 'life' get in the way of art. My time lately has
been occupied with painting baseboards and recaulking the bathrooms. Save
me! When does the next exchange open?

Also, a question for you teachers out there - with summer coming up and
money too tight for a whole summer of camps I am eager to create activities
for my two kids - 3 and 6 - a perhaps a few other 6 yr olds. Any suggestions
on some very basic introductory print making activities? Both of my kids
have seen me working and are very eager to explore printmaking but I don't
know a safe way to introduce the medium to them in a way that wouldn't
require much involvement on my part. I'd really like them to be able to get
a piece from conception to production without much help from me. I do
traditional western printmaking aand have rollers, inking slabs, etc. I also
have a stash of caligo safewash inks, speedball water based inks, and I have
an old book binding press for printing. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Shelley

I am starting to feel a little offended by some of the posts lately about "fine art" not selling on etsy and that some seem to be suggesting that price is some how part of what defines art. So because I am able to sell my prints on etsy does that mean that I am some how less of an artist? Do I not make fine art? I have sold my prints in a gallery for way more money than i do on etsy but after the gallery takes their cut and the up front costs of framing in the end i have the same amount of money in my pocket. I make larger editions (50 to 100) so i can sell them for less. Etsy gets 5% instead of 50% I make about the same on each print and more people are able to afford my art is that so bad? Oh and i sell out editions. Okay let me get this straight
higher price=Fine Art lower price= craft or trinkets. people buy my prints on etsy = I am not a fine artist. I don't know why i even bother to respond because i really don't care if people think my art is "fine art" or not. I have sold prints big and small and shipped them all over the country (USA) and around the world (I even shipped a print to Antarctica once) all because people saw them on etsy. Fine art or not I get some walking around money and someone somewhere gets one of my prints. so poo on you! snobs!

AMEN!!! You tell 'em, Viza!

What good are high-priced prints sitting in your storage??? Better to sell them at a reasonable price and have them out there.

In my experience (not that i would know anything about fine art printmaking since i sell my crap prints for cheap on etsy) using the composite metal leaf with Designa Size Gold Leaf Adhesive has worked great. I have had fun using metal leaf and although it is fairly easy to do it is a bit time consuming. I have also used the Mona Lisa sizing but didn't like it as much. I want to try real gold leaf but haven't yet. Here are some product links with some helpful info

AMEN to that Viza! I have not liked the way this discussion has gone as of
late. Yeah, some of you DO have snobbish attitudes. But I get my prints out
there all over the world (though not Antarctica that is so cool Viza), I get
exposure for other artistic endeavors and a decent amount of money at the
end of the year.

Wow. Is this where Baren is at? Pile on if it feels good?

You're going to bash each other based simply on the definition of "fine"
art, and "crafts"?

Everyone of you is right. It's all art. You are all (the ones I've seen
work of or put in links) very talented artists who produce some really
compelling and incredible works. I'm honored to be allowed to listen...
sometimes.

that said -

What you're really arguing about is perception, target market, and
distribution. NOT ART. You're all artists who sell to different markets
through different channels. Simple, not snobbish.

Artists who sell exclusively through galleries are choosing to target a
completely different target market than the Etsy seller. The target
customer, who also have their own perceptions about what "fine art" is,
is looking to buy art through the distribution channel that makes them
feel good about their purchase. It's plain sales and marketing. It's
still all ART.

If you have a million bucks to decorate, a $6k painting makes you feel
good about being able to have something that a great percentage of
consumers can't. That mentality drives a certain mindset. Alternatively,
many would never "pay" such an extravagant amount "to make an artist
rich" (definitely perception).

Be happy with your work, your market, your collectors or customers (see
how perception plays a part - some artists have collectors, some have
customers) and the money that you make from it.

Aside from that, quit being so sensitive and realize that a New Yorker
is thinking differently than an Iowan, and rightly so.

Put those other shoes on before you start hammering people. Don't we get
enough emails without the negative ones too? I know I do.

So now you can hate me, but there is enough negative crap out there. Do
we need it here to?

Best to all. I hope to emulate the excellent work that I've seen here.
Also hoping for a less nine year old bickering.

Excuse me a New Yorker is thinking different than an Iowan? That itself is
rather offensive. And yeah, I found the quote about selling trash as kin to
selling on Etsy offensive and unnecessary.
