Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking lately and as always, I learn a lot from the discussions
here. I've also been taking a little break from printing for a few months
and now am ready to get back into it. I'm planning a series of bleed prints
using multiple woodblocks, and I wonder if someone could suggest the best
method of registration. Is it as simple as keeping the paper as close to
the block size as possible and then lining up the edges? I think the other
methods I would normally use require a margin of blank paper, and I don't
want that for this project. I'll be printing on a press, if that makes a
difference.

Hi Amanda,

I am a bit of a lurker as well (apologies!), but I actually have a suggestion for a question!

I took a class last year from Karen Kunc, and she had a neat way of registering her bleed prints. Her wood block was slightly bigger than her image and she outlined the image borders on the block with permanent ink and put T marks on two or three sides. We covered this with shellac so it wouldn't erase or transfer. You could do this for multiple blocks if you were careful with your measurements. Make the marks dark enough to see through a layer of ink.

Since you will get some ink on the wood borders, you will want to cover the entire packet with some newsprint, and may want to wipe down the edges periodically. We printed this way using a lovely etching press at the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia.

I recently finished a little print that I cut and printed Moku Hanga style in black and white. I had two cousins (siblings) that each married (not to each other) last month and I decided to color in this print using watercolors to make it more colorful and use it as a wedding present.  It was well received and since I still had a few 4X6" blocks of Shina, I went ahead and carved the color plates and proofed them yesterday.  These were very hastily printed on Shin Toronoko with a slap of color and a dab of paste (not enough) just to check out registration but the multicolor bokashi didn't come out too bad. If I can open up a window of time, I think I'll try to print more carefully and see how we go. I know there's a lot of comments in the archives RE: hand coloring prints vs. color blocks and I suppose I'm on the fence about which I prefer--at this stage I certainly am more facile in W/C and can get lots of colors in really fast (on one print) but I was surprised at how lively the color prints came out. They have a different "look" but I'm mostly pleased with them.
