Hi everyone,
If any of you can watch BBC4 tonight (in the UK) there looks like a really
interesting programme about Wabi Sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of, in a
nutshell, the beauty of imperfection. It's part of a series of programmes
BBC4 is running at the moment on the art and culture of Japan. Last night
they showed a documentary by UK art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon on the
history, art and culture of the Samurai.
Wabi Sabi reminds me of a line from a Leonard Cohen song.
"There is a crack, a crack in everything; that's how the light
gets in."
In our world of the pursuit of clean lined perfectionism, of digital
enhancement and surface polish, the idea that real beauty lies in
imperfection is worth some serious contemplation.
By the way, I draw. 50% on paper, 50% on a pc. The 2 are becoming as
interchangeable as a pen and a pencil. I've just had 40yrs practice with the
pencil, and only 8yrs drawing on a pc with a tablet. It's not about what you
use, it's about what you do.
There was a time when the pencil was new technology, and was viewed with
disdain by people who would only draw with a brush.
Have a look at the etymology of the word 'pencil', it's very interesting.
