Thanks so much for all the great tips on using BFK with moku hanga. I
feel properly armed and ready to give it a whirl. Will let you know
how it all turns out.

I attended the Seattle Print Fair and was so pleased to see the work of Annie and Eva at the Cullom Gallery upstairs at Davidson Print Gallery. Beth and I had a good visit about woodblock and I loved seeing all the work on the wall. Eva, your new work is so free and exciting, good job. I could just see the energy in the strokes.
Annie's work is equally exciting but in a different way, the subjects matter and technique really amazed me. It is so different seeing the work in real life. It was a real treat for me.
I actually bought a Helen Hyde print, done in 1912 and called "Going to Market"
It was beautiful and I am really excited to be its steward for the time being. There were thousands of prints, I spent hours looking at them. What a great time it was! I also got a small print by contemporary artist Eunice Kim http://www.davidsongalleries.com/artists/kim/kim.php the one I got was similar to the ones at the bottom of this page.
All in all a great weekend but I am tired. Lots of wonderful woodcuts, etching, lithographs and monotypes. A real feast.
My best to all
Barbara

Posted by: Dave Bull

Continued from [Seacoast in Winter - 8] | Starting point of the thread is [Seacoast in Winter]

Step #8 - Next tone on the water, stepping up the depth quite a bit ...

Step #9 - And another one right on top of it ...

This now leaves two more blocks for the sky, two for the rocks, and two for the water, although I may certainly have to do one or more of them again, once I see where we have got to at the 'end' ...

Subject: Always One Step Behind

This morning I pulled out my favorite section of the Sunday NY Times, the Book Review, to look at the illustrations (confession: I hardly ever actually read the reviews) and I was amazed to see that the art director had commissioned 7 illustrators to do portraits of Lincoln in two colors -- red and blue! Damn, just like the piece I'm doing this week for the Limited/Unlimited print exchange. I feel like I'm always just a few steps behind the pop culture freight train.

Well, I'm going to do my red and blue Lincoln anyhow. Here's a sneak peek on wrinkled crappy newsprint:

LincolnTest

I still need to adjust the ink colors to better match the oil-based inks the others will be using, but I love how the image seems like it would pop if you wore 3-D glasses. I'm also really excited to do an image that only takes two impressions!

And here's a link to the NY Times portraits. Enjoy!

Subject: PAPERWORLD RECAP
Posted by: Dean Clark

Susan and I just returned from what I believe was a fairly
successful trip to the Paperworld Trade Show in Frankfurt, Germany. This show is about a lot more than paper, and it's huge! The best part of the show, other than renewing acquaintances with many of our friends and customers, is the variety of new products we've planned to add to our inventory - soon.
For the paper connoisseur, we've seen some amazing papers that will soon grace our shelves - and your studios. Our freinds Nancy and Peter from the Japanese Paper Place have introduced us toMr. Moriki of the world famous Moriki Paper Company. The pride that he shows in his product is remarkable, and rightly so. Moriki has been making fine relief papers for generations. We have ordered some remarkable sheets that hopefully we'll have to show at the upcoming Southern Graphics Conference in Chicago (mark your calendars - it's just around the corner).
Some of these new papers are limited availability, but they are well worth the effort.
We also visited with Barbara from Lascaux Colors in Switzerland. After a lengthy and very productive meeting, we're . . .

My 'Griffin' is not new to you but my news is... He received an Honorable Mention in Printmaking at the recent East End Art Guild's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition. Again, I was the only printmaker so it is an honor to be included after some tough jurying by Puerto Rican artists Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila Rinaldi, and Nelson Sambolin. Hurrah once again for printmakers! If you get a chance, the show is at the Centro de Arte Angel 'Lito' Pena (Humacao) until 27 February. It's a great show!
