Sorry to those of you on the Old Baren Digest. For some reason, this didn't read on the New Baren Digest so I will try one more time:
I meant to respond to this two digests ago but you guys were fast on that one! I'm glad to see that everyone is willing to step up and put their two cents in though.
"Where this is all going to take us is of course still not clear. The
pessimists will tell us that people will no longer create content if it
is all going to be simply stolen from them, and that we are in for a
cultural collapse."
I myself have thrown this one around but it's physically not possible for me. In the end, the only one an artist is punishing is themselves.
"Optimists will reply that as 'getting $' is not the
primary motivation for humans creating stuff, that we'll find a way
through."
How does that phrase go...."Love makes the world go 'round but Money greases the wheel." True that. I guess you could swap the word "Wealth" with "Money" and get the same general idea. Good luck paying for emergancy retina surgery with a set of fine art prints.
I hate to sound like a jaded "Yes-(wo)man" but someone had mentioned artists getting the shaft when it came to displaying work in other venues such as hospitals, coffee houses, and restaurants. It's hard enough to sell work in a gallery much less these places. There is the constant feeling of being used that comes along with cutting a check for the opening receptions for shows. People flock in and suck up all the wine and hours de ouvres and then leave with narry a cent spent. Sometimes they go so far as to trash the place or work without as much as an "I'm sorry." It's hard to get red wine out of raw canvas. I was surprised to find out that many people in our community think that the city foots the bill for the openings with public funding. No one assumes that the artists must shell this cash.
With respect to the net, I upload all my images to the net with the notion that it will be stolen by someone one day anyway. Crappy dpi always helps against piracy.
As I was reading these posts, I decided to surf around to see if I could find a site "dedicated to the sale and promotion of only hand pulled prints". I did find www.handpulledprints.info but I would have thought that there would be way more artists involved in this site. Anyway, this may prove to be too big a venture to launch at the moment but it would be great if there were some way of massing enough printmakers together on a selling website to become the "difinative website for purchasing fine art prints". We as a culture of printmakers might actually stand a chance of getting noticed in the art community as opposed to the "fringe" implications I feel are associated with printmaking.

I was wondering how most of you scan your work onto your websites or blogs. My scanner is too small/short to do that so I have just been photographing it. It's ok.............but scanning would probably be better. Do you take it to Kinko's or somewhere?

Linda, I cannot recommend my scanner more for what I need. It's my other left hand.
HP Scanjet G3010, bought a few years ago.
