I went to Alaska with my husband once and forgot that I had stashed an all in one tool in my pocketbook. My mother had gifted these items to us over the holidays and I threw it in there and never thought about it. It was like a swiss army knife with a cigarette lighter built into the side. When my purse when through security they just about had a fit and made me take my shoes off to swab for bomb material. The said "Ma'am, we're going to have to confiscate this item." and I told them to just go right on ahead because I had forgotten it was in there and I just wanted to get on my flight! I would hate to see the same situation go down if I had my 500.00 collection of carving knives with me. There would have been a security fight and a strip search no doubt. Just wanted to let everyone know that I don't think hanga knives on a plane is going to float.

medium-size gang war. Checked in, of course, but nobody batted an eyelid.
What really grates is Eurostar -- there's no checked-in baggage so you have to
discard any sharps before the security check. I asked a policeman at Waterloo
station before departure last spring; he's now the proud owner of a gardening
penknife I forgot to leave at home. Grr.

Also thank you for the link to Cindy Woods and my thoughts are with her
and anyone here that knew her or came in contact with her works. Her

 My latest creation: "Moonshadow" is done on black Arches paper, a cork color block and cherry line block. Printing on black paper with opaque inks can be tricky because the opacity is different for each color. Obviously white prints best, but it also "eats" other colors and makes everything milky. This time I chose to use pearl pigment in the inks to make the image glow and give opacity to the subtle colors wihout milk. Not that I'm against milk, but with breakfast, not on my prints. The pearl pigment makes the inks shimmer. When the prints were drying in the studio, the image could be seen in the dark. I thought it was pretty cool to have a fluorescent moon lady (or a bunch of them) hanging in the studio. The cork once again traps some of the ink and spits it back out in darker lines and clumps, but this time I used lighter ink on the moon to let the black paper add some irregular shadows on the moon. So there she is, "Moonshadow" in all her glory. |

Subject: Goldwell Adventures Update and the Red Barn Art Center

 The Goldwell Adventure has been partially uploaded. I uploaded pictures from the workshop which show off the interior of the Red Barn Art Center and me working away. Well, if you can call making art in eden "working". I also uploaded pictures of the workshop, some of my faithful and fearless students, and their work. It was fun leading them into the world of the woodcut in such a great place. Photo albums of the place itself are coming but there are about 1200 photos to go through and I get tired of sitting, click, click, click...so they will get there but in due time. Meanwhile, the view to the South is prominent in the Goldwell Project page, it's almost enchanting even in a small web size. Imagine the silence and the wind brushing gently against the creosote ocean...

 Racing to finish printing at least the color proofs before we go to visit family for Thanksgiving and got this done this morning. I'm pretty happy with the colors although I printed a few in black and white and a few with a more brown background. I did a bunch of versions on all sorts of leftover Japanese papers and a few pieces of watercolor paper. Most printed well without too much trouble and no more blotchyness! They used to put oysters in the stuffing. Maybe........ Happy Thanksgiving! Hopefully we all have what to be grateful for. --Andrew S. |

 -After a wood engraving by John Gilbert- 5" x 7" cherrywood block print on Somerset paper with Graphic Chemical Bone-black ink. Thanksgiving is still two days away, and already I have a finished print for the Christmas cards I will be sending to family, friends, and those who bought a print during the year. Perhaps this year I will even start my Christmas shopping before Christmas eve! |
