I laughed at the blog about tying the baren...I kept my first baren in shape with tape until it was all tape.
Then I tied miserable looking ones for a couple of years. Then in Kansas City I finally tied one well with Dave's help. I think I will always keep that one as the goal to measure up to.

But now I know the secret..... those who tie barens for a living actually have three hands and an extra foot. It is true.
Also they are strong. It took me 4 years of trying to finally get that baren tied correctly, and I am keeping it just that way. So not using it of course, using others that are not so perfect. I suppose I will eventually use it and wear it out., but in the mean time I am still admiring my handiwork. It was a vern inexpensive one so really more of an art piece than a useful tool. And I show it off when I teach, saying, "look, if I did this than you can." Ha.

The real answer for me is to find some unsuspecting person who is really strong and say "can you help me with this for a few minutes? Just hold this here and don't let go, no matter what" In the mean time I will do the other side and hook it all together.
This is the real secret, having help. I highly recommend it.
My best to all

Well Barbara..... I am sure... and Marnie agrees... that I explained
all about this sport at Bootcamp.

I showed and introduced you the the strong arm devise I thought of and
I’m thinking that you have or are having a senior moment.....

Use a rubber clamp.....

Now I bet this rings your bell loud and clear.

Do you remember how I used it ....
Go the the DVD you got from me... it is not something that is easy to
describe ... it is all there simply illustrated in glorious
Technicolor picture..... as demonstrated by my buddy Noboru Sawai.
He did a superb job of demonstrating the technique of tying on the
bamboo husk....

It truly is a walk in the park guys.

colour me cheeky

Graham,
I think you have to be ready to get the information. When I first came to boot camp ( I don't even want to think of how many years ago that was ) I was a total novice so one can only absorb so much. A clamp is a good idea and I am sure it works well.
