I am home again jiggety jig after ten days in Japan.

I would really like to thank David Bull in Ome for giving up what
turned out to be the best part of his printing day to spend time
talking with me. Thank you David.

I really did enjoy our meeting and experiencing your printing space. I
am sorry I took up so much of your day when you were in the middle of
printing.

A few days before I had been up to Oyama to Hiroshi and Yai Tomihari
and their Museum of Wood Cuts for an overnight stay. Hiroshi and Yai
have been to Australia several times since 1989 when I first learnt his
carving methods in oil based printing on one block, and then they have
stayed with us to teach in WA including one year for four weeks......
my younger daughter Nicki was at home and at Uni then speaking
Japanese. Since then I have also been to Japan to stay with them before
for one of my exhibitions. Hiroshi's English has improved but my
Japanese hasn't!

Hiroshi has invited me to exhibit again in Oyama with him and two of
his other student "members" next October 2009. He wants some of my
oily prints as well as some of my hanga prints and some new ones if I
have time for those too as I am now working five days a week! But I
want to do more woodblocks and today feel like giving up my day job to
concentrate on my next exhibition pieces here in Perth and those for
Hiroshi.... it looks like I could be burning the candle at both ends or
taking a few "sickies".

I just had a wonderful time in Japan figuring out the train system and
the underground subway and I am sure have increased my grey matter by
100% in just one week!! I flew into Nagoya on the same plane as
Dennis Lillee, Rod Marsh and their wives... they are cricketers (for
the USA folk) whose sons are the same age as our William and used to
play with them in their younger years, and I came back in the same
plane and same connections again as Dennis and his wife from
Narita.....statistically unpredictable!! I had host families from my
daughter Nicki's schooling scholarships in Nagoya and Narita, my
woodblock friends in Oyama and Ome and my nephew's wedding in Tokyo
meeting up with my sister from the other side of Australia from
Albury..... so a very busy time in all.

So it looks like I could be heading up to Oyama again next year......
so I had better not give up my day job especially in this economic
climate!!

Thank you David. You are certainly an inspiration to us all and to see
your prints in hand I feel very privileged. Thank you.

I'm surprised everyone is being so nice and tolerant re an intolerant and
disgruntled person who talks about having to 'kiss ass' etc -which seemed
totally unnecessary and disgusting....certainly a case of 'turning the other
cheek' - very admirable!

I have been asked to do a demonstration at my local wood store...sort of a strange thing to happen, since I am not a true "wood carver" in the sense of what this store sells, but I need to find a source for flex cut tools where I can buy just one or two as I have some. They want me to demo them but they only have big sets and I don't want to buy tools I won't ever use as I already have all that are known to mankind for the process of woodblock printmaking.
Maria, I know you use some of these, have you used the knife and does it work well? I have a couple of gouges.
I appreciate the info if anyone knows where to get them online. I have till November but want to give them a good try before I look totally inept trying to use a new tool.

Flexcut tools are still my favorite carving tools because of the handles. I
have an inkling to fit my Japanese tool blades into Flexcut handles but
haven't gotten around to it.

For your purposes, Barbara, you might look into their "travel" set which
comes with one handle but all the blades in a neat box. Then you can always
carry that in your purse for those emergency carving fits (am I the only one
that gets them?). My only complaint about Flexcut is their blades are so
short that their "life" is much shorter than the traditional Japanese from
McClain's or the Baren Mall.



The knife works well, although as you know I rarely use it. Funny you should
ask, I'm teaching a workshop this next weekend so I have been faithfully
practicing my "traditional toh" carving daily. I'm getting pretty good at it
and as a side effect, see a real advantage in detail carving. Also, I found
the knife is THE WAY to carve my quirky cork, finally the breakthrough in
cork carving that the world was awaiting.or not.



Anyhow, if you want to spare yourself the expense and borrow some I trust
you with my life and happily will send you part of my set(s) after I'm done
with my residency on Oct. 27. I have the standard set, the detail set and
the palm set.

Viza,
I always use etching inks for relief printing, in fact, I never buy
block ink. Charbonnel is one of my favorites. They need very little
modification. I use the Gel Medium, sometimes called Gel Reducer to
modify - it takes very little. They dry quickly and I've never had a
problem.

Hi All,
It took me a few requests to get included in the blog list but I figured it's nothing personal. I just asked again and eventually was included. Everyone who works for the group is volunteering and also has a life, right? I'm not sure I understand all the hostility. There's just too much of that in the world right now and keeping things civil and friendly at the baren makes it a peaceful oasis.

Hello,

I too wish to thank our volunteers. Dave has put many hours into this
list as well as Julio and others. They work for the benefit of
everyone and do so with a kind and giving attitude. Any problems I
have ever had with Baren have been resolved with kindness and some
times a friendly reminder that I am doing something I should not. It
is merely good manners to say please, thank you and I am sorry when
one is wrong.
So THANK YOU BAREN COUNCIL FOR YOUR HARD WORK.

I also use Charbonnel inks and about the only thing I
do to them is to use transparent base to extend the
ink. The one real exception I've experienced is the
Sanguine, which is very long, IIRC.
