If you just so happen to be in the Chicago area, please come check out our
3-D print exchange. There are a handful Baren members involved (Gayle
Wohlken, Diane Cutter, Marissa Bushow, Ld Lawrence, Jason Engelhardt, and
Dan Allegrucci, and I). Below is the press release with all the juicy
details. As the one year anniversary of Spudnik Press approaches, I am
reminded of all the people who helped the studio come to fruition...
included each and every person who contributes to Baren...

SPUDNIK PRESS announces:

Spudnik Press Turns One
Celebration and Fundraiser
Saturday, June 7, 2008 7pm-2am
Gallery opening and Air Hockey Tournament: 7pm
Dance Party: 10pm

Spudnik Press is hosting a night of festivities on Saturday, June 7th to
celebrate their first year as Chicago's alternative, cooperative printmaking
studio. The gallery's most recent show, 3-Dimensional Prints, will open at
7:00 pm (free for all ages). This group show features 27 artists from
Chicago and beyond using a variety of printmaking methods atop a blue and
red 3-D grid. When these prints are viewed through snazzy Magic Viewing
Glasses, the images vibrate and pop off the page.

During the art opening, the Spudnik Press Fundraising Air Hockey Tournament
will take place. Each game costs $3. The winner of each game will choose
from a variety of prizes donated by local artists and businesses. Prizes
include handmade prints, books, jewelry, and accessories, such as votives
created by Cursive Design and an Alana Bailey Brand poster.

Starting at 10 pm, a dance party featuring DJ Fancy and DJ Joelseph, will
begin (21 and up. Minimum donation: $5). The dance party will continue until
2am.

All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Spudnik Press print shop, and
will be used to help establish the Spudnik Press Artist-in-Residence

One Year Anniversary event, and a variety of classes and other events
offered at Spudnik.

Spudnik Press is open Mondays and Thursdays 6:30-11pm.

Interesting about how the mind reads the word even when it is spelled
totally wrong. I have had this problem with my email address because I took
the one that left out the t in Smith and people email me and it does not get
to me because they just put in the t. I have been thinking on getting
another hotmail address so that does not happpen and just add numbers to the
end instead of leaving out letters. Also, people leave the second n off my
name all the time. I fill out credit card applications and other types of
documents and they come back to me as Marilyn not Marilynn and I print and
write my name on the form myself, they just change it because that is a more
common spelling. People really do not pay attention, I guess they let their
mind put together words as an image that is most common. What is the
connection in art?? Does that mean that we could do only a portion of an
image and people would fill in the rest because that is how the mind
works??? For example half a face, half a hand, the sky and the ground with
the center blank??? Only a roof top and a foundation for a structure??
Roots for a tree and a leaf to identify the type of tree or plant?? The
possibilities seem endless. I would guess that is what makes abstraction
interesting, each person viewing a piece sees different images in it.
Interesting.

Hi group,
I had a sort of epiphany this weekend. My husband and
I had gone to the garden center to stock up on annuals
and perennials and herbs. I looked around at the
crowds fighting for a parking space and pushing carts
full of plants to their cars and thought "Why don't
people buy art like that?"

The week before I had had a booth at the local art
center's art fair and after a great couple of hours
the rain came and the customers fled. So I was
thinking about the difference in motivation to buy.
What if art were perishible and magazines urged people
to buy fresh art all the time and constantly upgrade
their art collections!? We try so hard to make our
"products" long lasting but maybe the ephemeral
quality together with heavy promotion by magazines
would make us all highly sought after! I guess I'm
just joking but it is ironic.

Long ago when I first started printmaking if you touched the surface
of a print it was a BIG no no.
I think things are much different today. If you can make the image
look the way it should in your mind then it's acceptable. Think in
terms of mixed media. Ruth

Bareners,
On the rare occasions that I ponder on thoughts that aren't really answerable it is always to the Baren Forum I turn.
My 'doctoring' prints posting has provided me with food for thought and leaves me well informed.
I'm totally in agreement with you all!

Hey,

We at Spudnik are starting to plan for way down the road, and are interested
in eventually having a Moku Hanga class here at Spudnik Press because I
don't think I will ever really "get it" if I don't see it done in front of
my own eyes and do it a bit in front of someone who knows what they are
doing... and I feel that there is a real lack of water-based woodblock
printing in this town.

So.... I figured this was the best group of people I could possibly ask for
assistance in teaching this. Are any of you Moku Hanga experts in the
Chicago area, and willing/able to teach the art? We are in very early stages
of development, and open to a 1-night thing, or a complete multi-week
class... If you are interested, or know someone who might be, feel free to
contact me or pass on my information.
