I was asked to pass this information on to other print-makers, so where better then Baren :)

Participation “Prints for Peace”
Deadline: August 20, 2008 Monterrey NL México

The Art/Human Development Workshop invites all Print Artists to participate in a “Prints for
Peace 08” in Monterrey NL México.

There is no entry fee in lieu of the donation of a print to the Prints for Peace collection of
Arte/Human Development Workshop of Casa Hogar el Refugio-Youth Shelter in Monterrey
NL México.

Various exhibits will be organized to promote Peace in the city of Monterrey.

Below is a list of requirements and the submission date for this project:

1. Prints. Each artist should send one print: original print, created in 2007/2008. Sorry no
digital prints this time.

2. Paper Size : The dimensions of the paper are 10 x 10 inches or 25 x 25 cm. The size of
the image might vary and might bleed out of the paper.

3. Theme. The theme is Peace.

4. Medium: Entries may feature any type of method of printmaking and should be signed.

5. Deadline: The deadline for receiving works will be August 20, 2008.

6. Opening: The opening of the Exhibit will be October 1 at 8:30 pm. At IMNRC in
Monterrey NL México.

7. Exhibits. All Prints will be exhibited. The image should be suitable for all ages. The
International Prints for Peace exhibit will be presented at the Leopoldo Carpinteyro Gallery of
IMNRC Intituto Mexicano Norteamericano de Relaciones Culturales in Monterrey NL
México. http://www.relacionesculturales.edu.mx/ Julian Nava Director of Cultural Promotion
IMNRC julian@imnrc.edu.mx , 52 81 80 04 90 90 Monterrey México. The prints will be
exhibited in other Galleries to promote Peace in Monterrey NL Mexico. The Photos of the
exhibits will be posted in the same page as the Art in the web.

8. Web Gallery. The prints that comply with the regulations will be exhibited in the Web
gallery of the IMNRC http://www.relacionesculturales.edu.mx/ .

9. Entry Form: The application (entry) form should accompany the work, including the name
and the nationality of the artist as well as the title, year and the technique used in the work.

10. Works send : The works should be sent to: HectorCadena Av. Eloy Cabazos2135,

11. Additional Requirements: In addition, each print must be accompanied with the
following information: Artist’s name, title, and media. This information can be printed
separately and cut to paper size, or printed and/or pasted to the back of the print.

12. Information sheet: One typewritten page with your name, address, and e-mail.

13. Sending Work: Please send by air-mail in a simple packet, unframed, without
cardboard window or passé par tout. The print should be protected so that it cannot bend in
the mail. Please allow enough time for the print to be here on time. Please send the print as
"No commercial value". Please note: packages with declared amounts of money arrive
directly in the customs to pay duty. These packages will not be received.

14. E-mail. Please RSVP by e-mail to: victoricaguadalupe@hotmail.com

15. Contact: The Prints for Peace will become property of the Art/Development Workshop of
the Casa Hogar El Refugio –Youth Shelter

All other matters will be resolved by the Prints for Peace Committee. More information

Heather, the Monterrey Prints for Peace post was already sent to Baren
a few days ago and was posted. It seems we have a lot of outside
exchanges being posted on Baren, and it has been requested that you
state that these are not legitimate Baren-sponsored exchanges when you
post about them. It seems some of the newer Bareners might be
confused between the official Baren Exchanges and these others.

Thanks so much for your reply, Dave. I should know to always search
your site when I have a moku hanga question. As usual your answer
clears things up for me, and a picture is worth a thousand words!
I've sorely misunderstood my wonderful hang-to all this time,
mistaking the difference in metal color for a bevel. I'm still glad I
sent the knife out after I broke the point -- the sharpener guy did
NOT make a secondary bevel, and the knife is feeling like new again.

Meanwhile, I've been reading "The Complete Guide to Sharpening" by
Leonard Lee and will be digging into the woodblock.com section on
sharpening. No more trying to weasel out of mastering this important
task!!

Four Oceans Press is still having sign-ups for their fourth Hand-pulled Print Exchange.
We have 10 more spots to fill - I hope you will consider joining this Summer 2008 Print
Exchange... All the details are below :)

Theme: SUMMER

Color: B/W or Color. Color is encouraged, but we love a good b/w image.

Image Size: At least 6” x 8” but no larger than 8.5” x 11”.

Paper Size: Paper must be no larger than 8.5” x 11”. It is OK if the image bleeds
off the edge of the paper.

Medium: Woodblock, Linoleum, Serigraph, Lithograph or Intaglio

Paper type: Any archival paper appropriate to your printing method can be used.

Print Deadline: July 15, 2008

Annie,

For a way too easy sharpening tool that has literally changed my carving
life, check out this very affordable solution(s):

I have sharpened with water stones since I started carving. As you may know,
I favor cherry for my blocks and this takes quite a bit of "elbow grease". I
also like engraving and engraving tools are a bit trickier to sharpen
because of the very small sharpening surface. I hone all the time.

After reading the "scary sharp" way of sharpening (see this page on my
website: http://1000woodcuts.com/Studionotes/sharpen.htm
I acquired a flat stone and have been extremely happy with sharpening with
sandpaper. When I travel, I take a Matsumura-san kit that comes in
tupperware and has all the traditional stones.

I mulled over getting a Tormek system for a long time, but geez...500 bux?
For a sharpener? BUT!
Then on one of my shopping sprees at Rockler I found that little gem of a
WorkSharp tool and decided to motorize my sharpening. Oh my oh my oh
my...MUCH QUICKER and precise than either of my previous methods and the
glass wheel lets me see EXACTLY the edge I'm sharpening. No fear of losing
the knife's temper because it is sandpaper (not a grinding wheel) and
sharpens so fast it hardly gets warm.

I highly recommend it for woodcut tools. You still need some sort of tiny
stone to remove the burr from the inside of the little 1 and 2 mm Us and Vs.

Just pop on over and you can practice on my knives :-)

Hi, I'm a fellow lefty carver and my Hangito has a bevel on one side only. The other side of the right-handed hangito. A bevel on both sides sounds like a mistake on somebody's part because you need the non bevelled edge up to the line you're cutting.

Great idea to use a glass wheel! They don't sell WorkSharp tools on this side
of the Pond yet, but a similar one could be adapted...

I was reading up on sharpening recently and came across this little gem:

If you look further down the page there's a home-made 'book' of abrasives
mounted on FoamX board, starting with coarser wet and dry paper and moving
down to lapping film (diamond-coated films that go down to .1 of a micron for
those that love massive overkill!). The last 'page' is leather for stropping.
You'd be limited to sharpening using draw-strokes for fear of pushing through
the board, of course. I'm making one to take on vacation... if it doesn't work
out then at least I won't have wasted precious baggage weight!
