Patti, you are indeed amazing. It is funny how much we can do if we set our
minds to it. I remember going to school, working and raising 2 kids and
keeping up a 3,300 sq. ft. house. When you finish the rewards will be
wonderful!

Greetings,
I normally post my photo bloggs to our 'After five' social forum. However, my latest photos are about a visit Cherryburn, birthplace of Thomas Bewick, an 18th century woodblock printer. Thomas was a jobbing copper plate engraver who spent his spare time cutting animals, birds and fish on boxwood for book productions. Most of his work was from direct observation. You may also be interested in additional photos of my wanderings in Northumberland searching for new painting / woodblock ideas.

Barbara and Mike,
Thanks so much for the info about maintaining the wood grain in the final print. Sorry it took so long for me to
acknowledge your assistance. Mike, I just tried your "brushing across the gain" suggestion and POOF! There was the wood grain I had
been looking for! Should have been obvious I guess but it seems there are so many variables with printmaking that it didn't occur to me. I'll try some of the other woods that you suggested too and Mike, thanks for pointing out wood grain examples in your own work.

Thanks,
Leigh

Thanks, Harry, for the Bewick prints and the special photos.

Everyone should know about a wonderful book about Bewick by Jenny
Uglow........"Nature's Engraver".................a great read.
You have brought some of it to life for me with your post.

A visit to UK always a pleasure..............Bettie Atwood

Photography Exchange with the theme of "movement". If you are a great photographer
or know someone who is, it would be wonderful if you would pass on the information
for this Exchange. http://www.fouroceanspress.com/exchange_photo.html

Take a Look, Read, Consider and then Sign up... http://www.fouroceanspress.com/index.html

If you can not get involved this time, check the website regularly for the next
exchange and other projects. As always, Thank you to all the Artists on the Baren who
have been a part of the Four Oceans Press Exchanges or other Exchanges here on

"where are you going for your graduate degree? you mentioned
academy classes. im doing the same thing through the academy of art
at the university of san francisco" - georga

Hey Georgia: we're classmates! I'm taking classes on-line through AAU in
San Fran. Are you doing classes on line or are you on campus? Hey I tell
you the funnest classes I took were (in order of greatest fun-ness first):

FA 603: MS: Mixed Media: CarrieAnn Plank
FA 631: MS: Book Arts: Michelle Gieger no longer teaches it, I can't
remember the new teacher's name; she's better than Gieger was-I have discs
with Gieger demos and templates and she made some big mistakes in
measurement.

FA 610: MS: Etching: Course Author: Sarah Barsness I had trouble with
the solar printing but I loved the intaglio on copper using very low toxic
materials. I actally came to like intaglio which I disliked before because
of all the toxic mordants and solvents. You could do this using new to art
materials in your kitchen safely!

FA 613: MS: Monotype and Relief Printing: Jenny Robinson it was a fun
class when doing relief, the drawbacks were 1- I don't like hand burnishing
monotypes and 2- I don't like using cobalt drier.

GS 606: Crossing Borders:Teddy Goldsworthy-hanner Teddy is a really neat
lady. There is a lot of hard work in this class but it's a great class for
developing another level of self expression in your art. Teddy is currently
my directed study advisor for my master's project and her and I have become
great friends, she lives in the bay area, two hours by car or train and we
visit each other often just to go to galleries and have lunch.

On-line has been a great way for me to do my masters. The greatest
advantage is that by necessity I have to learn to safely set up my own
studio. When you go to land based classes the studio is all set up for you
and you learn nothing about how to do the same techniques at home...

Ok enough on this sorta slightly pushing the edge of being on topic
posting...

Sherri--me amazing??? I don't feel that way, my home is a catastrophe area
and my studio space is a shambles...I'm so busy with school, mentoring a
teen artist and teaching (I'm doing a few hours a week in "artist in
residencies") I can't keep up with running a household and showing my
works... But I'm loving the work and soon will have more stuff to post to
my blog--when I get a moment to breathe--

Cheers all,
Patti

hey patti
how cool. im doing online classes too. right now im taking etching with sarah barsness (who i love). ive had trouble with the photopolymer plates as far as aquatinting goes but everything else has been great. i took mixed media with sarah also and loved it, thanks for telling me
about these classes. i defnitely want to take book arts.
i totally agree with you about the advantages of online classes. ive been wanting to find a safe way to do etchings at home and now i can. as far as your house and studio go, personally im glad to hear you say that yours is a shambles because mine certainly is!!!! i teach art at a high school then come home and do homework for my classes and on the weekend i go down to my moms and try to help her however i can. house work is the last thing on my to do list.
the monotype and relief class sounds good too. now if they woul just teach a class in hanga id be sooo happy!
id love to talk to you some more about school etc. if you have time, you can email me at aqua4tis@aol.com
thanks
georga
