One more 'welcome to Baren' Kris! I've just had an enjoyable time
viewing your website - super work!
(your illustrations remind be a bit of Raoul Dufy's woodcuts (often
wrongly termed engravings) - you must be familiar
with his work?? also a touch of Mucha ...but very much your own style.!!

Kris, I've been so busy with background Baren stuff, I just now had
the opportunity to look at your website and your prints which I like
very much for their rich color and boldness and interesting composition.

Like Peter had said, if you poke around the Baren website, you can
find a lot of prints made by your fellow Bareners, as well as a page

Also, any time there are blog listings, if you look at the list under

Hi everyone. I recently joined the group and have already learned a lot
from the discussions. I wish I had known about Baren Forum earlier! I just
wanted to introduce myself: I'm a Baltimore-based printmaker working in my
home. I do woodcuts and gelatin monotypes, and I try to keep my work as
nontoxic as I can. I've recently started working with Akua Kolor and Akua
Intaglio Inks, and have enjoyed experimenting with them very much.

I'm excited to be part of this online community!

Thanks for the welcome, Kris. I started out with a couple of colors of the
Akua Kolor and the Akua Intaglio with the intention of deciding which set of
inks I wanted to invest in, but I liked them both so much that I ended up
getting more of both inks. Akua Kolor is very liquidy and has intense
pigment. It brushes nicely. To roll it with a brayer, you mixed it with a
bit of tack thickener and it rolls very well. It will be a bit more
transparent then.

Barbara mentioned long drying time, which is good for clean up, but you have
to keep this in mind with your prints. With one-color prints and prints
with light layers, I have had no problem, but I really overdid it with some
retarder on a print with four different colors, and I'm still working on
getting the prints to dry, so my best advice is use retarder very
sparingly. I had used it because I liked the consistency, but I really
should have used one of the other modifiers. Barbara pointed out that Akua
Kolor dries by absorbtion into the paper, so I think next time I will try a
thicker paper rather than the very thin Japanese paper I had been using.
Someone in another group suggested that I spray water on the prints to help
them dry because water is a drying agent for Akua Kolor. That didn't work,
but it did give me the idea to try mixing a little water in before I print
if I want the ink to dry quickly. I will report back if this works. One
thing that did work to make my prints drier (but not totally dry) was
putting them in the oven on a low temperature for 10-20 minutes. McClains
gave this idea for Akua Intaglio and it works, so I decided to try it for
Akua Kolor, too. You just have to make sure you don't burn your paper.

Akua Intaglio is good for rolling out while maintaining the rich color
because you don't need to mix a modifier into it. I don't know if I have
the new or the old version of the ink, but I really like the buttery
consistency. I have used it with relief printing and to do an intaglio wipe
on a collagraph, and it worked well for both.

For a very simple clean-up, I scrape down any leftover in to save or toss,
then use Pampers Sensitive babywipes to wipe down. I don't know what's in
them, but it cuts right through the ink and one wipe goes a long way.
