Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding stretching paper before printing on it. I've read that paper could be run through an intaglio press to pre-stretch it before soaking it, and this would help with registration. I've tried to do this, but was not able to notice any difference, and I'm wondering whether there was something wrong with what I did. I've done this on Khadi lightweight paper, which expands quite a lot when soaked.

Do I need to moist the paper before running it through the press? Would this be a closer approximation of the state during printing?

Also, the top roller of my press has ridges, which leaves very pronounced marks on the paper if I run it without any blankets. Would I be able to stretch the paper if I use a blanket on top to avoid these marks?

By all means, dampen the paper first. To avoid roller marks, put the paper between two sheets of plexiglass and run the sandwich through your press ... you will need blankets to absorb any excess moisture. You may have to dry the paper, rewet, and run through the press a number of times to get it stretched as much as you want. The down side is that this will compress the paper, and you will lose some of the fluffiness and lovely surface texture.

Use the blankets and stretch the paper damp...be sure
to use newsprint between the blankets and the paper to
keep the sizing off the blankets. Sizing will
eventually make blankets stiff and you will need to
wash them..,not something anyone wants to do.

It will make a difference, once run through the press
damp paper should not change shape until it dries,
then it will of course get smaller.

I think it will make a very slight difference dry if
you use it dry,but if you dampen it after it will
change shape every time. it is called calendaring the
paper, it is done commercially with heat but we just
use pressure. It is how they make the surface smoother
iin manufacturing but we are just pre stretching it.

Janice Hook has dropped out of the exchange and John Center is now in.

Remember, the drop-out deadline is April 1. If you must drop out,
please do so a early as possible in order to give people on the
waiting list time to complete and submit their prints.

I received my first set of prints from Ruth Leaf last week and mine
are drying. I'm hoping everybody is on there way to producing
wonderful prints.

PS the Great Baren Cairn is glued to a backing, all blocks leveled, ready to
proof but I had some unusually good sales at my ongoing exhibit and had to
dust off the mat-cutter (darn it, huh?). Will proof possibly next week early
and update the Cairn pages.
