Hi Bareners,

Thanks so much for all your help with finding carborundum. For future
reference, I found it available at Daniel Smith and also Takach
Press. Susan and Dean, I hope you'll let us know when you start
stocking a substitute like aluminum oxide.

Alex, a ball-bearing baren is WAY stronger than the Kurosaki plastic
baren. I like the plastic baren, but I use it only when I want a
light touch. For smooth coverage of large areas, I haven't found
anything better than the ball bearing baren.

Oscar, thanks for your kind words.

best, Annie

Hi Alex,
I only tried the traditional baren for a short time in
the class I took with Takuji Hamanaka because the
minute I tried the ball bearing baren the results were
so much better I couldn't imagine using anything else.
Takuji said ball bearing barens require less strength
if I remember right. I am not sure what my ball
bearing barens are called so I'll describe them. My
first one is the one that has a hard plastic handle
which is one piece with the disk. The second, more
expensive one, has a nice twisted leather handle and
some sort of cork on the outer perimeter of the
surface. There is a metal flat circle (surrounded by
the cork) out of which the bearings protrude. I was
doing well with the first cheaper one but I thought I
was missing something because my teacher, Takuji
Hamanaka, said the nicer one was easier on your
hands/wrists if I remember right. I am not sure
which of the versions it is but my guess is that it's
the smooth (not stiff) one with fewer bearings. I
bought both barens through the baren mall.

What I discovered was that the cheaper one works
better for me! It is very flat and for some reason
seems less likely to dip into low areas. Maybe that's
just because the bearings don't protrude as much. I
do like the leather handle on the second baren but the
results for me aren't as good using that one. The
leather handled one has larger bearings and fewer and
they protrude more from the metal disk. I love the
look of the more expensive one with its tiny brass
screws.

I guess I'm just a fool for equipment I think the
Korokoro baren from Baren mall is a great deal!!

Baren Cairn update:
I've been working! The Cairn is getting closer to printing time. I will
finish prepping and proof this week, yeah! that's THIS week. Printing will
commence next week and probably take a couple of weeks, saving some days to
enjoy 70 degree weather we're having all of a sudden.
Progress and pictures: http://1000woodcuts.com/projects/cairn/index.html

Exchange #36 update:
More like a change in procedure. The Details form has changed:
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_36/exchangedetails.html
Please be sure to completely fill out the form, this is necessary for the
colophon completeness, the website completeness and the sanity of our
archivists at the UK Museum of Art. Thank you so very much.

Other Exchanges Updates:
Exchanges #32 and #33 will be uploaded this week!
Exchange #34 will be mailed out back to participants very soon, after the
February 8th last deadline.
Exchange #35 is in Mike Lyon's very capable hands and he has been dutifully
sending updates. Thank you all of you who rushed your prints to Mike.
Exchange #36 is off and running, sign up is complete and I just KNOW
everyone is already working on their prints to make the deadline.

I will continue to update on Exchanges as they progress.
Trivia: did you know that there are over 930 prints in every exchange???

Cut!!! Print!!!
Maria

I put my zip code down wrong on the sign up page!

My correct address;

Steffan Ziegler c/o UBC
55 Francisco St, Ste 780
San Francisco CA 94133

(On the list, I put 94131. The post office has been able to deal with it,
and I've received 10 rats so far, but I thought we should save them the
labor if we can.)

Alex, the ball bearing barens are worth every penny, ESPECIALLY if you are doing large flat areas of color.

Also you don't have to worry about replacing the bamboo etc with the ball bearing barens, which is a big advantage.

They are like the power tools of barens.? The disk baren is not very strong at all and you will frustrate yourself to no
end if you try to print everything with it.? The disk barens are good mainly for small areas or thin lines.

The Murasaki Baren is a good medium strength Baren -- I have it and use it for most of the things that I don't use the ball bearing baren for.? I actually have two of the ball bearing barens, one with fewer ball bearings for big flat areas and the other with more ball bearings for more delicate lined areas.? I got both of them from McClain's but I'm sure you will hear good things also about the ones from the Baren Mall.? i have no idea what the price difference is.

happy printing,
Sarah

Lynn,
I had to change my browser to Firefox and then everything on the
Forum works as intended. For some reason it won't work on Safari.
Try Firefox, I think you'll like it. There are some trade-offs, but
overall it is very good.

Cheers ~
