Thanks for the replies regarding fine lines. I'm using acrylic gesso -- bought a 16oz (~500ml) jar about a year and half ago, and still have some left after quite a lot of woodcuts. I sand the block, spread it thinly and evenly on the surface with a foam brush, and sand it again when dry. I'm always printing with the press, since I like to use heavy papers, normally used for etching. However, it'd be hard to print japanese style on these blocks, the coat of gesso is not good for retaining pigment, and the results are very uneven, as if the color is washed away from the surface. Pretty ugly.
Bob, I think acrylic gesso would help with the toner transfer. I haven't tried the heat transfer, but transfered laser prints with acetone, and it gets transfered really well, better than on uncoated wood.
Thanks,
Tibi
PS. I don't know what happened with the second half of my original email, probably Yahoo Mail decided it's not that important.
