Wonderful River Series Dave---The rocks, the trees, the river, and all!
Lots of success on your 19th Exhibit in as many years..

The month of November I had an art exhibit of various types of work--Art
Retrospective. There were 40 pieces, 10 were woodblock prints. On the first of
two walls of my woodblock prints was a large sign with your quote Dave:
"If you like doing something isn't it better if it takes a long time?
It came from our Barenforum brochure . A stack was sent to me by Barbara
Mason a while ago and. there was a copy of the brochure availabe for anyone to
take and they did. Thank you to Barbara and to the person (?) who put it
together.
Viewers had a good interchange talking about the quote.. They also were
interested in hearing about whole process of making woodblock prints. During
my Lecture/Gig I passed around one of the carved woodblocks. An interesting
observation about 2 of the prints.was made during a conversation:

The first print I ever did, "Bijou", looks so complicated and the most
recent print, "Mr. and Mrs". is the most simple. Why is that? Have I changed my
style?.

I explained that it was the same procedure-starting with a simple geometric
and printing in a square. For Bijou I experimented first with layers of
the image and turning the paper on a light box until I found something that
satisfied me. Then I overprinted using both sides of a thin paper and several
colors..

I was about to do the same, years later, with the most recent geometric,
but I immediately found an image that said "Mr. and Mrs." to me and I went no
further. That's a good example of KISS-Keep It Simple Stupid and Less Is
More (Robert Browning)

At the end they wanted to know why I called the talk a Lecture/GIG. This
e-mail is getting long enough, so ask me offline if curious.

Living in the land of no wood. I have a box filled with small blocks from
the northern woodlands. No large lino with me. (and I can't but it here)
How do I fill up a 10x10 square piece of paper??? I have been thinking on
it for days. Finally sketchbook in hand I have come to the moment of
enlightenment. (I think). Remember the comments about Dave and his moment
of inspiration??? And the comment that one needs to work and not wait for
inspiration. Well if one works and keeps working inspiration will finally
arrive, it is you seeking it, not it coming to you.
Now to put the idea to work to see if it does indeed work!!! I love all the
input and thoughts put forward on this list. And, I love the challenge of
doing an exchange. It puts me into new thought patterns and pushes me!

My rat, Templeton, is nearly ready to print. My friend Mary adores this
carving, so she will get one too!
