OOps Dave I was looking at the wrong print when I commented that I liked it.
The River in Winter is indeed very different. I can see that the rock is a
bit disjointed. However it seems to work well with the darker wave action
at the top right, sort of a balance there. I love the movement of the
water, wow! At first glance this image took my breath away. You have
something going on here that is special, regardless of any faults that might
exist. I think it is the feeling, the motion of the water, it just draws
one in, you have created something great here.

Dave

Your print is marvelous, as others have said. Having struggled with drawing water for a long time, I guess now it's time for me to try printing it :o) !! You have done a wonderful job with the water and its movements.

And in contrast to other comments, I especially like the colouring and the shading on the rock in the left-bottom of the print.
You've done a great job with the gray scale here, and earthy, stone-dusty colour.

Thanks for a great lesson in carving and printing I will be studying this often.

Mike and Mark,

Thanks very much for your replies and encouragement. As you guessed, tonal
variations in the blacks were at first unintentional. I stuck with them
because they partly compensated for carving thicker than I wanted due to
brittleness from my heat-transfer hanshita. Your suggested hanshita method
is similar to what I used to do with spray-mount adhesive on linoleum blocks
(but easier on the lungs), so I'll give it a try. I'll also print some more
to see if a tad more paste or water helps the red.

I'm sure that asking such specific questions starts generations of masters
turning in their graves, but lacking a shoulder to look over or time enough
to make all the necessary mistakes on my own, I appreciate all the help I
can get.

Thanks Mike, for your sterling work with the Baren print exchanges.
Congratulations Maria on taking on the role of exchange manager.
Dave, your latest river print(s) together with an incredible knowledge of skill I rank as some of your best.
Where I've been ( on your website) : " My career as an artist-printmaker was at an end - my career as a craftsman-printmaker was ready to begin ... with this, my 22nd print ...). Your latest prints make your case for being essentially a craftsman very slim!.
Good luck with the annual exhibition

Harry quoted me (from 19 years ago ... he has a long memory!):
> "My career as an artist-printmaker was at an end -
> my career as a craftsman-printmaker was ready to begin ...

I've been thinking about this "I am not an artist" stuff quite a lot
over the past few months - obviously - and you know, I'm not really
ready to change my mind on this just yet.

People are saying nice things about the print I just finished, but from
where I stand the attractiveness of that one comes from the _technical
skill_ that I brought to a basically simple idea. If the two things -
the art and the craft - have to be thought of separately, which I'm
not sure has any validity, then I would put them at say, 5% art and 95%
craft.

I guess my point is, the idea of flowing water is really simple, and
lots of people would think of it ... have thought of it. Nothing
special. But the decades of practice that went into giving me the
'chops' to then make it real ... that's what I bring to the table. And
that's _craft_!

Anyway, not to reject your idea out-of-hand, but just to say that I'm
still pretty ambivalent about this whole thing ... and I think I'll
leave that web page as it stands!

Dave
