I second Sarah: I've done editions in the hundreds using solarplate,
both intaglio and relief, but I use oil base inks and clean the plate
with veggie oil. The water from the paper and the water base inks
together with washing it in water will break it down faster than
fast. Oil base inks form a film to protect the plate from the water
in the dampened paper. I have used the Akua Intaglio inks with some
success, but never wash the plate with water. Water is the culprit!

Cheers ~

Well, thats why there are apples and oranges,,,
I always wash the plates with plenty of water,,,the
secret is to harden them very well before you begin to
print..10 minutes in the sun will do it. Even if I
print with oil I clean up with salad oil and then
water.
However, saying that, I don't keep them wet for a long
time. I have used akua kolor on the plates and washed
with water and printed at least 100 copies...so I
guess maybe it is how fine the lines are on relief
plates. Real fine lines will come off even using oil
based inks and solvents as there is just not much
holding them if you washout the plate out down to the
metal.
Best to all

Hello to Baren Members:

Thank you for accepting me to join the forum. I am a Mexican Teacher and Artist working in Mexico. I am married with three children. I was a foreign student for 10 years in the US and have a BA in Art from San Diego State University. I have dedicated my academic work teaching research methods and doing research in social issues in Mexico.

I have started to teach Art in 2005 and have returned to do Art. I am interested in Human Rights topics in my Art. I am teaching a volunteer Art/Human Development at a Youth Girls Center. I am teaching printmaking to the girls also. I would love to participate in the print exchange so I can share with students and fellow artists your different techniques; I hope you find my prints interesting also.

I enjoy very much doing prints of all kinds.

I live in Monterrey which is 2 hours by car from the Texas border. When I have to mail outside Mexico I use the US mail because it is cheaper and faster and my husband has a US office where I receive mail also.

Congratulations on the work you do as coordinators of the exchanges. Happy New Year and Best Wishes for the 2008.
