"I would like to print white, so that I can use a few more colors such as
light and
dark purple. The Akua block print inks wont work because of their
transparency. Any good ideas out there?"
If I remember right the water based inks are actually acrylic based so you
should be able to use white acrylic paint and print the Akua inks over it.
Use a viscous paint like liquitex thick paint or Golden's dense gessos.
Test this first.
1.Paint a smear of white acrylic paint on a test peice of paper and let it
dry
2. then paint some lines on the white with the Akua ink and let it dry
3. then rub with a finger.
If your lines rub off then this wont work. Remember like attracts like so
if it's acrylic based then anything acrylic will work with it.
If your lines rub off then you may try white guache, Windsor Newtons guache
is pretty good, so is Schmeinke.
"But I printed 25 rats in relief using waterbased ink before the plate
started to fall apart. Little pieces started to fall off the rat's back,
but that was not from printing, that was from washing it."
Sorry for posting twice in one day, I'm catching up on forums sent over the
holidays. Jean, I was told in my etching class that a solar plate will
only print about 25 in an edition before the plate starts to break down.
And your right, I don't think bareners will mind us discussing this as
relief technique.
Barbera I would love to have a copy of your solar plate notes. I did very
well with solar for straight line work but just couldn't get it to work
with aquatint no matter how little or long I initially exposed the plates
they fell apart on me after the second exposure! Sorry for asking in the
baren but I get the digest and it doesn't show the email addresses...
Cheers and Happy New Year everyone!

Want to thank everyone for their wonderful pigs and a special thanks to all those who have trusted me and already sent rats. My very belated pigs are being printed and the rat is being cut. Will send them all out very soon.

!
You will have trouble printing akua kolor over acrylic
paint as it dries by absorption into the paper..if it
cannot absorb it will never dry. akua kolor has a gum
in it and is honey based...nothing like acrylic.
to print white over color, just use gouache. I think
it will print white over watercolor. If you are
printing it last you can use acrylic paint but you
will have to move fast as the drying time is quick.

Annie B,
What a great little print and wonderful thought - that of pausing to
center ourselves and then taking that calm with us as we re-enter the
storm. I am going to try to remember to do that. I have been so
thoroughly wrapped in a very bad cold that all I can do is let
everyone around me know how miserable it is to not be able to
breathe. I hope with your little print held firmly in my head, maybe
I can get outside of myself for awhile, and appreciate all the wonder
around me. Isn't it just amazing what art can do?
Welcome, Eileen - how nice to meet you :-)
Happy New Year, everyone ~
