I am very aware tht this is not about art or printmaking. I just wish to
extend my sympathies to any Baren members who might live near the wildfires
in southern California. I hope you and your homes are safe.

Just to ensure that we care about all aspects of relief printmaking (not
just Moku Hanga) I added a Baren blog entry for some YouTube videos (19 in
total) by the folks at Don Black Letterpress. If you are not familiar with
the company they are one of the few remaining outlets for used presses,
type and all other hard-to-find printmaking equipment. They are located in
Toronto and I remember buying some quoins keys from them about six years
ago....nice folks !

Checkout the videos: http://barenforum.org/blog/

Thank you very much for that, Julio! It took a moment to realize that the
engraver is the same George Walker who wrote the excellent "Woodcut Artist's
Handbook". He doesn't look at all how I pictured him :-)

David, was it the beard or the good sense of humor that did you in ?

Some of those other videos are cool and hit home for me. I have an old
(they were manufactured in Chicago between 1934 & 1959 !) Model 02
Vandercook proofing press that weighs a ton...although it is not motorized
I got it cheap and came with a beautiful metal cabinet. I love the thing
and do most of my prints on it....

Here is a catalog photo of it (the one on top) from an old catalog....my
cabinet has been painted green !

I also have the smaller Model 01 with it's original cabinet but I don't
use this press so much anymore.

Anyway..here is the link to Mr. Walker's website where you can get your
fill of more wood engraving goodies:

Thanks so much for sharing the links!
Here is another page of these wonderful presses. I am lucky enough to have the one in the center on the bottom, in beautiful original condition.

A bit of both. Rather unfairly I think of wood engravers as quiet, studious
types who chat with their end-grain (not a negative in my view as I love wood
engravings!). Mr Walker seems anything but.

Those are lovely presses. They must be a pleasure to use. I'd love to have the
room to house some equipment like that!

cheers,

Hello everyone,

I've been quiet for what seems a very long time, reason being the loss
of a second parent-in-law in 4 months and all the consequent kerfuffle
and these last couple of weeks the catching-up with my 'day job' work.

I haven't yet had a chance to read all your posts, but I shall. I have
a few days now till the next job is due and at last can look at my
press and engraving blocks and ask...'Now, where was I?'

I'm thinking of getting some sort of powered routing tool to remove
backgrounds a bit easier (weak wrist and a tendency to gouge fingers
with the chisel!) and wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I
really want to get the background of my doggie block lowered more and
it's proving very hard slow work.

In the meantime I've been tinkering with a teeny little block depicting
a cottage and hope to get that printed shortly.

Now I'm off to clear the decks ready to engrave some more of it!

Sue (in the UK)
