Nope, I didn't say that at all.

Hi everyone! Nice to see us crowding back into the Big Room again.

Alright, then, I'll double-post sometimes when I'm working a topic on
my blog that I think would spark some interest on the list as well.
Sounds like nobody would consider that "spamming". I do love this
list. I was struck with Andy's honesty when he wrote "Perhaps some of
us - myself definitely included - have become a little lazy...
passive ... lurky and need to contribute a little more to the main
debate." I could say the same about myself.

So on that note, can you help me with lighting? I'm using basic
incandescent light right now - an overhead ceiling fixture, two
hanging fixtures over my desks, and a swing arm lamp. Plenty of
light, but because I often do my woodblock work at night I'm afraid
I'm seeing everything too yellow. What do you all do about lighting?
Do you use fluorescent bulbs, and if so, what kind? Isn't fluorescent
light too blue? Has anyone tried "full spectrum" type bulbs? I'm
looking for something I can use in a standard fixture; a screw-in
type bulb.

Flourescent bulbs have changed so much in the last few years, it is really hard to say what is available in any given area. I have installed large, 3 foot, 4 bulb, overhead flourescents in my studio with solar spectrum bulbs. The bulbs were not cheap, but they were well worth it. Now any color I mix in the studio looks the same in daylight. I am not sure how the screw-in flourescents rank these days. The older ones were sort of greenish, but the newer ones seem much warmer. A lot seems to depend on the brand.

Cheers ..... Charles

Annie, welcome to the big room :-)

First I bought cheap shop lights and installed them on bicycle hooks in the
garage. After a while I installed some better fluorescent light fixtures
with 4 30"? long bulbs. I buy the daylight bulbs and they are NICE and give
out a very daylight-like light.

Over my carving bench I have a track light also with daylight balanced
fluorescent bulbs. I went all fluorescent last summer after a $600 power
bill. They have lasted me for 5 years so far. Previously my track flood
lights went out almost every year.

I also use a magnifying lamp with, you guessed it, a daylight fluorescent
bulb. I need it more and more these days, my eyeballs refuse to focus and
unfocus quickly anymore. Sigh.

Anyhow, they now make nice fluorescents for every type of light fixture
although they are more expensive. They last longer.

Maria

Hi Annie,

I use the 'full spectrum' fluorescent bulbs in my office at night -- they
aren't perfect but they're pretty good, and very easy on the eyes.

Given that the spectrum you see from the sun changes throughout the day
there's only so much you can do to obtain a consistently coloured light source
anyway. Short, that is, of a room with blacked-out windows and constant, even
artificial light -- great for colour matching but lousy for yer sanity :-)

I'd suggest you try a couple of those bulbs (they last longer than
incandescents anyway), make a colour pencil sketch, a quick painting or
what-have-you that pleases you and check 'it by daylight the next day.

cheers,

David H

I use 'daylight' fluorescent, 8 foot double-bulb fixtures, HIGH FREQUENCY
BALLASTS (eliminates perception of any flicker or strobing). I'm told that
a better balance is to pair a 'normal' (cool white) bulb with a daylight
bulb. The light in my studio is almost daylight, very nice to work under
(especially compared to incandescent bulbs which are installed elsewhere in
the building and are very yellowy red), quiet, and have lasted 9 years
without a replacement (probably the color has changed somewhat by now).

I love 'em and if I had it to do over, I'd install 'em all over the
building!

Mike
