Dear Annie,

Yes, I do use soap to wash out my brushes as Barbara indicated and Tom
too.

If you have a brush that is hard with paste and / or pigment then I
would soak it in warm water with the bristles down and in water just up
to the wood but only for an hour or two before starting to clean it as
below.

After printing a colour, because I have only a limited number of
brushes of different sizes, I wash them in the sink under warm running
water and then with good pure laundry soap (like Sunlight soap) we have
in Australia I lather them up in my hand...gently but lather well and
rinse them out, repeating this until all the colour comes out. I find
that black and red are the hardest colours to shift, but I never leave
the pigment or paste in my brushes.

I have the professional quality brushes from Japan so the bristles are
dense and are already shaped so didn't need to burn them or use the
shark skin at Graham's Bootcamp. That is why I am particular with my
brushes.

Barbara mentioned I soak them..... I soak them for half an hour before
using them to print and that is because the water swells the wood and
tightens up the point where the hairs come out of the wood..... so I
don't have any hairs falling out of my brushes. Don't pull hair
out...if you have a longer one cut it rather than pull it.

I have always been particular with all my brushes and never leave paint
of any kind in them and always wash them out thoroughly even with turps
for the oil based ink ones but then I wash out the turps with warm
water and pure laundry soap.

Living so far away from good supplies I have to look after my woodblock
printing materials.

I was just wondering when the next batch of past exchanges would be available for viewing in the online gallery?
