I think that old-fashioned wallpaper paste, available in power form
from hardware stores, is methyl cellulose, and very inexpensive when
packaged as wallpaper paste.

This is the recipe I was given by a bookbinder, and when I add a few (didn't
count?!) drops of clove oil it does last at least a few weeks in the frig.:
1/3 C corn starch
1/2 C cold water, mix till smooth
Add boiling water, stirring, till it makes up 2 cups. It will be thick and
will need to be diluted when ready to print.

Have also used the basmati rice recipe someone posted here in the past, it
kept well with the clove oil too.

Claudia -

Like most printmaking supplies, your first place to look is Graphic
Chemical & Ink Company (www.graphicchemical.com
). No one carries more in the way of
printmaking supplies - including scraper bars.

As far as the motor goes, it is possible that it's shot, but before I
tried a new one, there is a reset button - at least on the Model 2's.
Try pushing that first. If that doesn't work, let me know where you are
and we'll see if we can't figure out how to get it fixed.

Presses are handled by Printmakers Machine Company. Printmakers rents
space from Graphic in Villa Park, IL and can be reached directly at
800-992-5970.

Jan,
I personally find rice paste a major pain in various body parts. My
recommendation is to use methylcellulose which is pretty easy to
find. It is used as sizing by papermakers and can also be used as an
adhesive. I mix it by the quart according to package directions and
keep it refrigerated between print sessions. I have never had it
attract animals - large or small, or mold, or do any bad things. It
is easy to work with and transparent. I like to stay away from
things like formaldehyde - someone might stuff me in a bottle and
pickle me as a biology project. One can't be too careful these days
what with the Taliban on the loose and all. :-)

Hi Jan,

Paste is super easy to make up but you can prolong the shelf life a few different ways. Formaldehyde isn't necessary, and you don't want to get it on you as it can cause all sorts of nasty effects and is highly toxic. But you can use several different methods to control mould.

1) Refrigerating works well, but paste is an organic material and if the fridge is full of other 'aging' things it will go off.

2) keeping a covered large batch and scooping out smaller amounts for use can keep spores off your main batch.

3) Keeping water on top of your paste will reduce growth but you will still eventually get some.

4) One easy way (and it means you don't have to mix anything extra into you paste) is to have a container with a screw top lid, attach something absorbent to the lid like a cotton ball or blotter paper then add a few drops of a thymol containing substance (like eucalyptus oil) - or ethanol, any fungicidal liquid really - screw the top on and the fumes should control the mould growth.

Thank you Sarah and Charles and Blackbirdie,

Yes, we can get methyl cellulose quite readily, Sarah, and wall paper
paste, but this recipe was given to me by the bookbinders and I was
"fishing" to see if there was something that others were using as a
preservative to extend its fluid lifeline.

Yes, we can also get ready made rice paste if you don't need it in a
hurry..... our art supply store used to carry it but are cutting back
as I suppose there are only a handful of traditional printmakers in
Perth and it just wasn't worth stocking. I can phone or email
Melbourne and get it here within a week.

Two of you mentioned Formaldahyde but I have a feeling that has been
banned in Australia... I know we used to use it years ago on the farm
but because I have a feeling it doesn't "break down" its supply has
been limited. I will ask at the chemist tomorrow and see what he
comes up with.
How does Formaldahyde react with the paper?

I will pass on all these emails to my book binding friend.
