tHow thrilling to read Bea Gold's account of her retrospective show. Bea, you are an inspiration to all of us. I especially liked reading about your reception at City Hall and how you saw Jackie Robinson's wife and the Animal Rescue Society there. I do not have a gallery to show my work in YET, mainly because I have been too busy to go door-to-door, hat and prints in hand. Worse, I have been too busy to apply for a seller's permit, which is fairly easy to get (you don't have to hire a lawyer to get it for you, you can do it yourself). However, it seems that now I will have a few mornings to devote to this task. There are people here who remind me to do that, thank goodness.

Years ago, we had a board member on the CA Society of Printmakers who reminded us gently at every meeting, of the rules concerning how many members of the board were allowed to profit from being on the board of that 501C3 organization. I think it was that only 50 percent of the board were allowed to be on the payroll. It was very comfortable to be in a group that had rules, where someone knew what the rules were and was willing to remind us of the rules without making us feel like a bunch of criminals for doing public service--I was on that board because I wanted to learn more about the art world and how I could fit into it, if it was possible for me to fit into it. No one was forcing me to be there. I was there because I wanted to be there. The effect of having someone remind me of those rules was that I gradually stopped thinking about the possibility of making money from being on that board. Some people were making money, but they were people who had been in the art game much much longer than me and were vastly more knowledgeable about it than me. My job was just to write down some of what they said and to remember the rest, in case they ever wanted a historian.

I am preparing a VERY LARGE woodcut of a flower that grows in the street and seems to like it there, since it is thriving in a crack in the asphalt or concrete or whatever that pavement is made of. It is called Golden Eggs Suncup and I think of it as the goose that laid the golden egg because it is so pretty that I wanted to take a photo of it right away. Of course I am taking photos of ALL the wildflowers I find in this area, so it's not as if it was a special one. It's just the FIRST one I chose to make into a VERY LARGE woodcut print. I take that back. It's the SECOND one. The first one was a print of monkey flowers that was an unsuccessful print. I call it a stupid print. It's stupid, stupid, stupid because it didn't work and it wasn't even as good as my nasturtium print I did years ago that was admitted to a CSP show. I am supposed to get better, not worse.

I am also finishing my Baren exchange print and wondering why no one reminded me that the deadline to submit that print is May 1.

I am slightly crazy with so much to do, and also because my dad died last fall, so even though we were apart for almost 50 years and only communicated once or twice a year, I am still greatly affected by this terrible loss.

Why don't I blog my art work? Even though I published a neighborhood newsletter for many years, I never reached awesome movie star status as regards doing everything in public. I just do not want everyone to see all my mistakes, even though I know that the art teachers say, you are supposed to incorporate your mistakes into your art work as if they were supposed to be there and it's not supposed to look like a photograph. So when I have something I am proud of, I trot it out on to my web site for people to see. I can't put sloppy work out there on a blog. Sloppy and stupid, that's what some of my work is. If they hired me to be an art critic, you'd probably never read a good review of anything.

Linda and I may still be able to get up to Chicago this Sunday depending on
what the doctor says tomorrow (I'm recovering from last Friday's surgery to
sew my right Achilles tendon back together) - I'll know one way or another
by tomorrow evening, but it seems likely we might be able to meet up with
some of you Chicago dwellers when we visit Art Chicago

Leedy Contemporary Art, was the only Kansas City gallery accepted to exhibit
this year, and Sherry has transported three of my recent drawings up there
even though she probably has space only to hang one at a time -- they're
about 7x4 feet each. (So, OK, Maria, you can stop yuk-yuk-ing in that
superior "oh, so Mike has some work in an ART FAIR this weekend? Well,
well, well -- welcome to the crowd!" tone of voice right this minute!).

If I AM released to get up to Chicago Sunday, we'll likely arrive at Art
Chicago shortly after 11am when the doors open on Sunday (11am 'til 6pm) -
maybe we could meet for coffee or lunch somewhere in the Merchandise Mart or
nearby?

Driving directions: The Merchandise Mart is bordered by Wells and Orleans
Streets on the east and west, and Kinzie Street and the Chicago River on the
north and south. From I-90/94, exit east at Ohio Street. Turn south on Wells
Street and drive four blocks to The Mart. (The Chicago River is on The
Merchandise Mart's south side).

My husband and I wanted to rent a house on the Outer Banks of NC for a family reunion, but my mother said we could not get along together under the same roof, so that killed it. At my father's funeral, no one thought to get a group family portrait. My cousin said I could not afford to rent a house at the Jersey Shore for a family reunion. The U.S. Army took my son for the last 20 years. It's just not much of a family. So Baren is my family, I guess. I envy Bea Gold and I am happy for her. Thanks for the invitation and sorry I could not be there. My thoughts were with you.
