I am very excited that I have been given the entire space at the Centro de Arte 'Lito Pena' in Humacao, Puerto Rico, for a solo show. The Centro de Arte is the former Mayor's Building, a large, high ceiling building with lots of wall space and an excellent hanging system. I was hoping I'd get more than the large main salon because I wanted to make a comprehensive printmaking exhibition. So, besides my own work, I am definitely including my collection of the Baren Forum Exchange #30 for one of the smaller rooms. I wish I had more space and I could include more people. The exhibit will go up the end of May and will come down in August.

It is coupled with the donation of my Dick Blick Master Etch press so I'm planning a tutorial in one of the rooms, with photos and explanations of how printmaking is done. Hopefully there will be a lot of interest generated for classes; the woman who runs the school kids' art instruction is a printmaker so the press will be in knowledgeable hands.

I'll keep you up-to-date on my blog as things evolve.

Diane

Howdee.

I've generally been working on etchings over the past years, but have been slowly easing into block printing.

The little instruction that I've had with block printing has been in the Western-style...ie oil-based inks rolled out on glass and then transferred to the blocks with rollers. I've been looking to add some more luminosity to my prints and have been reading as much as I could find on the internet as well as buying different books on the subject, but have had a little trouble finding information that is not Strictly Japanese style (ie Dave Bull) vs Western rollup.

One of the things that grabbed my eye was the use of goauche colors for inking the plates, but no matter how much poking around, I cannot seem to find information on this. It seems that I would need to mix the goauche with some kind of thickener in order to apply it to the plate, especially if I want to do some blending of colors (gradation) but have not found anything definitive in terms of instruction on the process. I've also been rather confused on how one would apply color to a plate with a brush - thinking that the 'edges' of the block areas would catch the brush and have the color run down the sides of the cut areas.

I reckon that the easiest thing would be to see a quick video clip of the color application to the plates but I've been surprised at the lack of this type of information.....or I'm just not looking in the right places.

Also, I'm curious as to anyone who may have experience with mixing the two techniques: brush/water-based-color and roller/oil-based color. I've some ideas on mixing the luminous and bold of what seem to be the various properties for the two different techniques.

And thanks for a very nice website and single place for information.

Cheers.

Friday the 13th was a good day for the Baren Cairn!

Received blocks from:
Colleen in IT
LD in Sequim (pronounced s-quim, I have friends there)
Doug Haug in CO (will be there in August for the Vail and Telluride
festivals!)
and Shireen in MD

We now have 20 blocks waiting patiently for all their friends. I will buy
more paper with the generous contributions received today.
I am getting very excited about this project; should be an awesome pile of
rocks. The designs are coming in very creative and I hope my printing skills
do them all justice.

Happy carving,
Maria
