This process sounds very much like techniques from collagraph printing (see The Complete Printmaker by J. Ross, for example). There are all sorts of variations, but I found more interesting to first cut the lines with a knife (they can be as "elaborate" as cutting close parallel lines for thicker printed lines, to just simple incisions for very thin ones). Peeling off a layer of paper from the cardboard exposes the layers underneath, which don't have the same smooth finish and will print as darker shades. I've tried it, and the methods produces some quite interesting results -- but haven't editioned any print, so not entirely sure how much printing can be done with this process (heard that not that much, maybe 20-30, though I've seen collagraph prints in editions of 100). One (possibly crucial) difference, though: I apply the acrylic medium after finishing the image; this seals the plate from any ink infiltrating the cardboard, and, I believe, prolongs the life of the
plate.

Thanks to everybody for all the wonderful and thoughtful advice. I am going
to look into the NH class, but given that I will be very pregnant in June
and it is two and a half hours away from me that might not work.

Is methyl cellulose non toxic? I don't want to handle anything nasty during
the pregnancy. But I would like something that keeps longer than rice paste.

I'm going to think about where I want to go with this before I start buying
stuff to experiment with.

I don't plan on using a baren, instead I want to use my printing press. I
don't have a very good baren and don't want to invest in a good one at this
time when my press works so well. People do use presses for hanga sometimes
don't they?

Hi all,
Just a little introduction: I've just started wood engraving again
after a 'break of some 20-odd years! I never really mastered it then
and I had no artist friends who could help me when I went wrong, and
then 'life' intervened. All the equipment got put away. I swore I'd
keep my burins and the other bits and bobs for another time. I'm so
glad I did.
I went up into the loft recently and got the box down. The first thing
I noticed was that my roller had melted! When I'd taken the gloopy bit
off the brass frame I managed to open the box that held my
burins....oh, they're soooo nice! And the leather sandbag, and
everything else was the same as when I stored it.
Now I'm halfway through my first engraving and loving it! I'm also
finding I'm not making the mistakes I made all those years ago; maybe
because I'm older I have more patience! (you can follow my progress on
my 'arty' blog if you're interested)
For my 'day job' I'm an illustrator, working mostly digitally these
days. It's so good to create away from the screen though.
I'd better shut up now...I'll say 'hi' as well to the other newcomer
Katherine...I'm in the UK too, in Lincolnshire. And we also have a
vintage-ish vehicle, a 1981 VW T25 (vanagon in the US?) camper called
Boris! :-)

Welcome, Sue... I went to your blog and am charmed by your little dog. The perspective gives him great character! I'll look forward to seeing it progress...

I also had a couple of melting brayers. They had a nice soft red covering which, during a few years of storage, became disgusting. I wonder what chemical make-up causes that. Now I stick with the cheap Speed-balls though I do have two very lovely Takach's which look like they will last a couple of lifetimes.

Hi Diane,
Thanks for looking! I'm going to do some more to it today but won't be
able to 'blog' it till tomorrow or Tuesday.
I'm told they don't make brayers out of that compound any more,
luckily. I kept the brass frame and will drop a new treolene roller
into it sometime. In the meantime I have a decent quality Lawrence's
rubber brayer to keep me going.
