I am not sure if this is the right way to post in the Baren forum.
Please inform me how to do it right if I am posting incorrectly. Many
thanks.
I have a question about presses. I am using a challenge proof press.
It is a great press but it will only print up to a 14' sheet. I would
like to print larger. Any recommendations for a larger press? I am
printing woodblocks using oil based inks.
Many thanks!

PS- I meant to type 14 inches not 14 feet (that would be an incredibly
large woodcut!).
(Re: Ross Zirkle:)
It's always sad when someone dies, more so when you have a relationship
with them. Ross had been a customer of ours for many years and he will
be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear this about Carol. I was just in Sacramento and was
hoping to meet up with her. Looks like another life. Sorry Robin. Bea
Gold
Thank you, Maria, for passing on Robin's message.
Robin... I am so sorry for your loss. I wasn't lucky to spend time with Carol but her work is wonderful and, through that work, she will continue to live on for us. I wish you strength...

well this has been the week for artists to cross over...
Its with great sorrow that I inform our bareners that Sacramento Carol went
on to grander more colorful adventures. She never fully recooperated after
her open heart surgery in September. She wandered sometime between Sunday
evening and Monday morning; peacefully in her sleep while sitting in her
favorite chair. I will miss her dearly, she has been a great mentor and
loving surrogate mother who eased entrance to a supportive art community
for this artist who had wandered far from her own home and family.
Many blessing to you Ms. Carol in your new adventures...

Please could someone give me a few pointers. Problem: I'm trying my hand at drypoint but I have problems with the wiping of the plate before printing.
I'm using Charbonnel etching ink and find the viscosity rather high and I feel that I have to make too much use of Tarlatan cloth as the hand wiping is fairly ineffective. I use zinc plate. I'm afraid that too much unnecessary damage is done to the burr because of it.
As I'm unsure how to approach this with confidence, the results are somewhat capriceous.
My thanks for any suggestions.

I haven't done etching in a long time but I have to ask if you are only
using tarlatan to wipe the plate? When I used to do it I would first use
little squares of cardstock to get off the bulk of the ink, then phonebook
pages and only then tarlatan cloth to finish up. That is the method I was
taught in art school.

Wouter,
When inking the drypoint plate ( using charbonelle inks) I always add a
drop or two of Plate Oil to the ink. It makes for much easier and cleaner
wiping.
Barbara P.
Wouter,
Spread your ink over your zinc plate that has been preheated, enough to still handle it, and squeegie the ink into all your lines. Use card board or mat board to squeegie/remove the excess ink. The soft nature of the card and/or mat board will keep from damaging your burr. Then use tarlatan to wipe the plate in circular patterns with the pressure of like you were wiping up a spill; do not scrub hard.Fold the tarlatan into itself to create a flat pad otherwise all the creases and folds will wipe ink out of your lines. When you have wiped the plate to a point that the lines are 'fat' with ink haze (halo-like) and your non line areas are relatively clean, switch to phone book paper wrapped around a chalk board eraser and polish your plate.
Hope that works,
