Subject: [Baren 32884] Latest print
Send Message: To this poster

Greetings to you all,

My latest relief print is a transposition of stowage in a slave ship that I saw in the William Wilberforce Museum in Hull well over 25 years ago. The original print must rank amongst one of the most successful anti-slave campaign prints of the 19th century. It still makes me shudder just looking at it.

From March and throughout 2007 there are events, particularly in the City of Hull to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in our (former) British Empire.

William Wilberforce of Hull was one of the main advocates.

Subject: [Baren 32885] printmaking classes
Send Message: To this poster

Elizabeth Busey was asking about classes in relief printmaking. Tomoko Murakami http://www.mayu-art.com/ teaches at Kala Institute, www.kala.org She does one-day workshops in hanga printmaking, with waterbased inks. She will be teaching during the summer there. I took a workshop with her at the Richmond Art Center some years ago. I found the class to be conducive to looser, less-controlled and less-precise block printing than others I had taken. I really don't know why that was the case--perhaps it was the teachers' attitude. When I took the class from her, she had shaved her head completely. She certainly knows what she is doing regarding printmaking. She makes huge hanging prints on cloth with very beautiful designs. I think she is not a member of Baren. I wonder if she would join if she knew about us.

Elizabeth McKay is another one who teaches hanga-style woodblock printmaking.

These are all in Northern California. It'a a beautiful place to visit. So when you come here, look me up because I have a spare bedroom and you can stay with me, no charge. It will be fun to have a visitor. I know Barbara Mason does that all the time, so I guess if Barbara can do it, I can do it too. My telephone is 510-237-5540. Jan Telfer came and stayed with me for a few days, a few years ago. She can tell you what a nut case I am and how filthy my house is too.

Working on a new website, learning Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash,
etc....

Still dreaming, carving, just not printing much Behind 7 prints.

Subject: [Baren 32887] New 9/11 printmaking project
Send Message: To this poster

Hello Printmakers!
If you are interested, I have changed the 9/11 print project into something a little more realistic.
This will be a book project only now, instead of a book and print edition set.
Each artist will be responsible for just one finished hand pulled print.
The book title will be: Through the Eyes of a Printmaker: Remembering 9/11
Please sign up if you are still interested. There are new deadlines and there will be a lot more sign-ups.

Hello everyone! I've been lurking for a while and intended to
thoroughly review the archives before posting questions. However, I may
want to ask a few before my paper dries, and I'm still slogging through
1999.

I am technology professional with no formal art training, but I have
always been surrounded by working artists. Until recently my printing
was confined to Christmas cards, typically 3-5 color linocuts done on
cardstock with Speedball ink in runs of 150. I grew dissatisfied with
the level of detail I could achieve in linoleum and the difficulty of
getting consistently good impressions. I was advised to try woodcuts or
wood engraving instead. I'm not proficient at creating light/shadow or
depth with line, and I see things most readily as patches of shaded
color, so the graphical style of Japanese woodblock printing conflicts
less with my limitations than Western monochrome line/density-oriented
styles.

However, I was still unsure what technique to use. I found David's web
site about a year ago and read some books as I tried to decide. I mulled
over every step of the process and saw how they all fit together to
solve with great simplicity the myriad problems of getting ink on paper.
I did my first monochrome woodcut a couple months ago, and today or
tomorrow I will finish printing my first real moku hanga. I'll put up
some pictures and post a few questions when I'm done.

Will there be an exchange 32? I thought I signed up, but have received no
confirmation. I'd like to know, I have blocks to prep and paper to order if
this is the case!

Steffan...

Here is the link for Exchange 32 (information page with those on the list): http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_32/exchange_32.html You are definitely on it. As far as I know there is no formal notification... it's just checking the info page to see if one is on it after the sign-up. Once there is an official coordinator you will hear more.

I look forward to seeing your piece since I'm in this exchange also...

Happy carving!
Diane

D'oh! I was looking right at that page. I totally missed the list of names
at the bottom. So off to Graphic Chemical to order paper then.

Thank you for your help to the newbie!
