Well, maybe. In the end they sort of walked me through it asking questions and sort of giving me the right answers and sending forms to sign that were blank...I assume they filled them in so it all worked. At any rate, I am a happy camper!
It's snowing in Oregon this morning...that means a day in the studio as who would drive in this weather with those nutty drivers...they think they know how to drive in snow...oh boy, are they wrong. So carving and printing are on the top of the list today.
best to all,

Thanks for all your hard work putting this together! I know this is a good
thing-but what does it actually mean for Baren?

Liz,
Good Questions and the answers are:
Number one it means we never have to pay income tax on the mall money or any other money we raise...so that is a good thing. (unless we suddenly make tons of money, and then we still might not have to pay any taxes) Also if someone gives Baren money, they can take a tax write off for the donation now that we are officially a 501 (c) 3 educational non profit. So if you gave baren $25 that is $25 you do not have to pay the government....assuming you are paying them big time like most people!
Also it makes us eligible for grant monies, say we wanted to do a huge exhibition of woodblock printmaking and invite printmakers from other countries to do workshops in conjunction with this exhibition. We could possibly find some foundation, say the Paul Allen Foundation which supports the arts, that would foot the bill for the whole thing if it met their criteria. Sounds way easier than it is to do this, I have written several grants but have yet to get one, so I must be doing something wrong! But now we are officially eligible for this. It also means we can get tiny grants from any small foundation to do tiny things, like print cards or do a mailing....and we can do it all over the United States since we have members everywhere who might be interested in doing this. We are only limited by our energy and ideas...
Best to all,

Hi just completed the 2500 mile drive from our Washington coast to the tip
of Baja Sur Mexico. Got out when there were storms on our coast, no power,
3 power polls down. We had a safe drive. Stopped on the Oregon coast at the
myrtlewood factory and bought more wood. Everyone seems to have been
sharing their favorite wood and mine is definitely myrtle wood. It is
harder than basswood and softer than cherry, a very pretty wood and nice to
carve. Got my 5 gallon bucket full for $15.00, but the planks do cost more
and I got a nice piece, I am excited to carve this one. And I got their card
with an email address for those who might want to venture into this wood.
However the gal in the shop said she hates to choose wood for others and I
do understand, it does seem to be a personal thing. So here is the email
address for the Myrtlewood gallery, which has a great room full of wood and
than more wood, a wood person's dream!!!

I have to admit I have not vistited their site so do not know what you will
find! I am settling in and can not wait to get to carving again!

Though I've announced this on Baren After Five already, I'm doing so
here, too. My newest and revised web pages have been up for viewing
for a few days now, and even includes a blog, though the blog part is
not entirely devoted to woodcuts, and I probably won't list it in the
Baren blogs because of that.

Go have a look:
